How to Obtain Components, After Mines Exhausted?
Hi Everyone,

I was lucky to start in the mountains. I was able to mine over 30,000 steel, and 40 components, with some gold, jade, and Uranium.

1. Alas, I have exhausted all my components through mining.

I want more components for (a) Hi-Tech research Bench, (b) Fabrication Table, (c) Limbs for my many injured colonists, and (d) more weapons.

2. What is the best way to do this?

Among the options I see are:

a. Waiting for traders to come, to get components

b. Building a caravan, raiding nearby factions, and seeing if I can scavenge some

c. Taking caravans to empty mountains, even one hex square away, and seeing if I can find compacted steel to mine

3. I do see the progression:

a. get 10 components to build hi-tech research bench
b. research fabrication table
c. build fabrication table, with ten more components
d. use steel to build components, night-and-day

4. Any advice?

You can also build a caravan and go trade with other places. Alas, those are yer options at this point. Keep an eye out for advanced components when trading. You will need 2 of em to make yer first fabrication table.

You can also make caravans to trade with other factions on a larger scale.

And with the right tech you can trade with spaceships through the comms console
or even build the mining drills to access the large resource stockpiles underground

The absolute best way is the long-range mineral scanner, which will find deposits that give ~100-150 components each time, and with drop pods you can be in and out of the temp map in under a day.

Setting up a second base is quite easy. You need to have the option turned on in the options menu.

Settlements get their own events, and raid strength is determined by the wealth of each settlement individually, so if you just have a couple of miners and not a lot of infrastructure you’ll get small raids.

Hills and arid shrubland have plenty of steel and components, btw. Doesn’t have to be mountains.

If you're allied to another faction, you can use the comms console to summon a trader from them at the cost of reputation. Don't expect components from a Tribal ally, but a Spacer or the Empire can be expected to have a bunch in a Bulk or Exotic trader.

The need the player has for Advanced Components, so they can then manufacture their own Components, is the first "hurdle" the player has to overcome past relatively simple survival needs.

It is obviously intentionally constructed to be exactly that - A hurdle.

The "Best Possible Solution" is to acquire Advanced Components by any means necessary as soon as you press the "Play" button and start a new playthrough of Rimworld. :)

The most common approach is to rely on a visiting Trade Caravan to supply you with Advanced Components so you can then build the Fabrication Bench and begin crafting your own Components.

That is the highest gameplay "goal" priority you have other than stabilizing your colony by providing the means for basic survival. Once achieved, things get quite a bit more complex and interesting. Also - If you do not obtain Advanced Components to build your bench, the likelihood your small colony will fail rises dramatically.

See here: https://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Advanced_component

Crashed Ships can serve as a source, so it's likely you will eventually get access to Advanced Components even if you make no effort to do so.

https://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Crashed_ship_parts

But... that's a dangerous method to rely on. It's far better to save up some items to trade and to try to get a trader to stop by.

Sending out trade caravans to advanced factions could work, but its a risky thing.

wat i do - I save up from the start and eagerly search every single trade opportunity for obtaining Advanced Components, sacrificing nearly anything in order to gain them as soon as possible.

PS: To add - In case it's just the extra Components you need and you already have some Advanced Components in storage, trading is still the most likely option that is also the "safest." BUT, if you're desperate, a short jaunt (caravan) out to a nearby hex may be the fastest solution to obtain standard Components.

You grow psychoid leaves, create yayo and exchange it for components if you run out. Then use those to make a fabrication bench. advanced components can be found in the ancient danger and other settlements

40 seems low. have you tried some test tunnels through larger hills and mountains to see whats in there?

Why would you make Yayo for sale when Flake gives 50% more silver per leaf used?
