Monitoring your food stockpile is as easy as looking to your left...
Those poor bastards...
Yeah it might be the mod Stinky mentioned, but there's one that keeps a "days of food left" tally on the bottom right there, next to the alerty messages.
I think you want Extra Alerts Mod then mate. (Edit) Oops that doesn't have food in it, but its a mod like that one you need.
Chocolate? DOUBLE CHECK. Plus an underline. And a smiley face. And a gold star.
Even without a fridge, stacks of harvested rice and corn last for something like 40 days (potatoes last a lot longer, if I recall correctly), so you can still keep a decent stock of those in the storeroom and provide simple meals reliably. Keep two rotating fields of rice going, and you will always have some crops ready to harvest in an emergency.
Tribal doesn't change food generation, start growing a field of rice on day one and you can have tons of food stockpiled within a week. Rice and corn last a long time, it doesn't matter if you have a freezer or not, you can keep plenty of food on hand at all times.
Are you even playing the game if you don't notice your colonists are starving???
So, you want a low food alert, because you were ignoring the LOW FOOD ALERT???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Your pawns will starve more slowly (it will now take 7-ish days to die once malnutrition kicks in). You'd have more time to realize they need some food before it's game over.
I am with others. The current game already provide you enough tools to notice food availability problems yourself by
1. checking the resource list (left side of the screen) frequently
2. a nice red "low food" alert at the right side of the screen
3. when working on your base, you could have "crossed" your stockpile room with your camera and noticing that it is empty. I even manage to notice that a storage room is empty when I was planning to add a new wing to my base.
EDIT: I recalled a mod you can use; https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1114619043
