I agree. If you are going to put them outside, why not just use the soil? The speed is better, but you could plant dozens more in regular soil and go for bulk.
Not sure if they short out in rain, but if so, then they would need to have a roof. If they have to have a roof, then you need a sunlamp. If you need a sunlamp, then just use the soil in a barn with a roof and ditch the basin.
This all changes if I have to do farming indoors. I still use the soil for corn for obvious reasons
Obviously he is in a biome where there is not as much usable soil such as an ice sheet or desert
If you do that, it is better to use sunlamps and the whole psudo greenhouse setup
