Why a colonist doesn`t tend himself?
My single colonist had 5 medicine`s skill and he had even herbal medicine to tend wounds, but he didn`t tend himself even though the self-tending option was allowed (btw I played without mods). And as a result he died in 18 hours because of bleeding.
What was that? Was it a glitch or it`s required something particular for using self-tending by your colonists?

If he didnt have the doctor job enabled he cant self tend

go into the health tab and enable the self tend option.

The reason it is disabled by default is two fold.

1. If it is enabled, that pawn would start to self tend as soon as they were undrafted after a fight and this would result in bad tending when you'd prefer your actual capable doctor to do it for them.

2. if your doctor himself is hurt or has reduced capability to manipulate objects (happens when your arm is shot or stabbed) they will suck at tending to themselves as well. So it is better to have another medical capable pawn tend for them.

When colonists are bleeding out it is very much advised to manually tend them as soon as possible. Left to their own devices colonists prefer taking care of their needs over doing jobs and tending is just a job even if it's life threatening. After a fight they are often hungry, deprived of recreation, and tired, and your doctor ends up grabbing a snack, playing some chess, then going to bed, instead of taking care of their own or other colonist's serious injuries. So you really have to order them to tend people right away in most cases before letting them run off to do that other stuff.

To clarify Astasia's post, they mean to select the pawn, right click them and select "Tend self" (or whatever it's called). Just in case you're new to the game.

Other than that, what woodiestmink says is true, even if self tending is enabled a pawn won't autonomously tend themselves unless they're also assigned as a doctor, and with a higher priority than other jobs in need of doing.

yes both hands of my character was stabbed after a fight - it`s a real reason for disabling self-tending?

Okay I didn`t try to switch priorities in that case. Perhaps it was the reason why my colonist did all things except tending himself

If you select the character then right click them it should let you FORCE them to tend themself, or at the very least it will show you WHY they can't: (not assigned to doctor) (self tend not allowed) (no medicine)

This is excellent advice. And if it doesn't show you exactly why it doesn't work it will at least give you a good idea of what it could be.

If they're carrying herbal medicine but their default medicine is glitterworld medicine or normal medicine and they have access to the superior medicine then they would walk all the way to where that medicine is stored and use that.
At skill 5 the self tending effectiveness would be very low, but may be necessary to stop them bleeding in time.

self tend is relatively reliable at medic 10 but at 5 you're probably better off getting another pawn with skill 3 or 4 to do it for them.

Sorry to jump in on this post , but got a question related to this. If you self tend , ie (in RL i cut my finger bad, i bandage it, then go to the hospital and they fix it better) does this work in rimworld ? if you self tend to stop bleeding out , can then a doctor do a better job if you go rest ? ie rip the crap bandage off you did and re apply ?

Not quite, but once the bleeding is stopped and they're resting in the hospital you have a chance to let your proper doctor do the next set of tending (for diseases mostly). Once they're patched they're good to heal, no "fresh bandages" needed unless you mod it in.

Without mods (and I don't know of any mods that do it either), you cannot re-do a tend unless it's a disease, which can be tended once the current tend "expires".

I have to be honest that really made me laugh. I guess I have a dark sense of humor lol.
