It looks just like that, it is a decently sized area but not much larger than that, if at all.

it's honestly annoying. You don't need to do any weird thing like dedicated stockpile for overland caravans either. The resources just magically are beamed up as well for orbital traders ... like how does that work and how is that realistic? Some design choices are really weird ...

would be cool if a big cargo ship came down to trade

The Sun Lamp is 11x11, the orbital trade beacon is 15x15. There's nothing that says you can't place the trade beacon in a 11x11 room the same size as a sun lamp area. A 15x15 room is too big to roof without supports anyway and I imagine most people use them in 11x11 or 12x12 rooms as those tend to be the standard room sizes to design around.

Orbital Trader (Bacon and Various Pork Products) has arrived.
*time to sell some of my pork*
next guy, dragging some pork along: finally been waiting months for this ship to show up.
*a queue of people wanting to buy/sell bacon appears in the background, 100 pigs surround them looking on in terror*

There's a mod called 'Steampunk: Trader Airships' that I've been using lately. It replaces orbital traders with a big airship that lands in your colony. Don't need no orbital beacons all over the place.

@play: that mod is simply a reskin of the original one that Winterwolf posted.

It's really immersive though to have actual orbital traders just like you have actual caravans showing up and trading with you. If only I knew how they knew where I lived since I crashlanded in the middle of nowhere ... hmmm ...

The game tells you very soon at the start that people likely noticed you crashlanding and that pirates will show up. Very little reason why not a single one in one of the permanent settlements nearby didn't see the giant ship crashing in orbit and debris falling to the ground and 3 capsules landing there.

you could find out by placing items in circles around the bacon (one layer wood, then a layer steel, then marble etc.
if you trade, then you see what items you can sell and conclude the bacons range
