Makes the animals come inside to sleep so they wont be outside sleeping when a night raid comes along.
When you get the raidwarning, first thing to do is set youre animals to the safe zone
With raiders attacking imidiatly there is stil a chance an animal is cought before it could enter the safezone but thats the same for pawns out there mining or such
You cut up the corspes and make Kibble out of the meat. Cutting up people will give a mood debuff if done by anyone other then a cannibal though. And if the Human meat gets mixed into the meals? Well then everyone is going to be pissed.
Make sure your stockpiles and bills are set up to handle this.
1. Change the allowed area of your animals to the safe zone inside you base
2. Draft the animals' master(s)
They will then wake up and march straight to the safe zone. Drafting the master always wakes the animal, but if you don't set the zone first, they may decide to go walk in front of the raiders for a snack before hurrying to safety.
I just went and tested this to verify I wasn't telling you something crazy.
What's your backup plan for if sappers break through?
Really though, that's pretty much it. I usually have a backup safe zone I could assign animals to, like the freezer. I generally double or triple wall my grazing areas (and the rest of my outer wall) eventually and by the time sappers break through I have colonists in position to start shooting them, using trees as cover since there tends to be a lot of trees in said grazing area.
Sometimes I also mortar the sappers as soon as they stop near my wall. Or I send a fast (advanced bionics fast) sniper or two out to pick off the "sapper" raiders before they even reach my wall, causing them to turn into a normal raid and chase my snipers into my killbox.
Edit: Note when I said "large area of the map" I meant like a 50x100 area or smaller, just large enough to keep grass and stuff growing, but not so large I can't easily get to those walls to defend them.
