I'm new to this game. How do I avoid food poisoning?
I just got this game thanks to the sale. I started playing and one hostile female tried to raid. Luckily there was a neutral caravan nearby that filled her with bullets. I thought that her naked corpse was the solution to my food woes, but while she did fill my belly, I got "Food poisoning (major)" from her flesh.

How do I avoid this problem? Human corpses are just too much free meat to ignore.

BTW, I got this problem even though I started consuming her meat while it still hasn't begun to spoil.

Proof that I am not making this up:

Eating raw food always has a 2% chance of causing food poisoning.
Cooked food has a chance based on the cooking skill of the cook and the cleanliness of the room, which is much lower with a clean room and good cook (note that the butcher's table is inherently dirty, you should have it in a separate room from your stove)
Meals made by the Nutrient Paste Dispenser NEVER cause food poisoning.

Also, it didn't cause "Food poisoning (major)", it caused food poisoning. Which will go through 3 stages: initial, major, and recovering, with different levels of penalty at each stage.

Double-note that the food poisoning increase for cleanliness only starts at -2 cleanliness, so it's not that bad.
If you're going to eat corpses, butcher them first and make them into meals. It'll make your not-cannibals less unhappy, you get more food out of it, and you get leather.

Eating your enemies is the easy answer, the powers you gained must then be balanced out.

How come my butcher spot doesn't allow the processing of human corpses?

They're forbidden from the job by default since butchering people makes everyone who's not a cannibal or psychopath very unhappy as well. You have to allow them as a material.

By default butcher bills and cooking bills will not include human corpses or meat because most colonists want nothing to do with longpork. You have to edit the bill to add those things.

You probably want to pay more attention to mood though. Food poisoning is the least of your issues after eating a raw human corpse.

Righto, next time I start a game, I will hit "randomise character" until I get a cannibal. This way, my character won't get demoralised from eating free longpork, and I might be able to process human corpses too.

Also, I don't have any mods or DLCs. I got the game less than 24 hours ago.

You just bought the game and decided to start with "Naked Brutality" start? Bad idea. Also, eating corpses isn't really neccessary. Most biomes are filled with berries and huntable animals. Just pick some berries and cook them up at a campfire or stove.

Well, someone's already in the spirit of Rimworld!

Food poisoning happens in 3 cases if I recall.
Eating raw food - there is always small chance, even with berries.
Your cook sucks - and incompetent cooking made the dish poisonous.
Dish was cooked in very dirty environment.

How to avoid? Cook food obviously - play with job priorities so only your best cook is allowed to use the stove. Built a stove in a separate room, with flooring, away from butchering station, because blood splatters count for calculating the dirtiness.
Have somebody on higher priority when it comes to cleaning, so filfth does not have time to accumulate.

I play this game for the same reason I play CK3. Not to win, but to do stuff which would get me imprisoned in real life.
