Is there a more efficient way to get rid of all the clothing?
So I like to eat people,

But butchering so many people leaves me with a lot of excess clothes I dont really need at all. So my colony is just littered with clothes and I do have a place where I store clothes but they're mostly meant for the ones I craft.
What do you guys do to deal with this?

You can sell them to visitors, make a caravan and sell them elsewhere, or you can burn them in a furnace or fire

campfire, melter, crematory set to destroy or smelt fainted stuff forever.

click and forget.

Make a room specifically for butchering people, have a butcher table and smelter in there. Set the smelter to destroy all tainted clothes and smelt all tainted armor. Don't allow tainted clothes/armor in any stockpiles. Crematorium is faster for destroying clothes, but the smelter lets you get some resources back from armor and makes the process more worthwhile. Both options are faster than hauling the tainted items somewhere else and dealing with them any other way.

Make dump stockpile, set it to shallow water, set it to priority: high/critical and then set it to like, awful-normal, 0-60% condition.

You can muss about with setting as you like and make multiple levels of dumps to leave stuff in, but if you make sure to leave junk lying in the water it rots super quickly and can reduce your base value pretty quickly if that's what you need.

You can also gift it to folks or sell it, but those both have repurcussions.

I dont think you can gift them to people tho.

Ya NPCs don't want tainted items, and the market value is basically 0 (x10% multiplier on tainted, plus it's usually damage, and raiders wear lower quality stuff). You can load them up into transport pods and fling them at NPC bases, if you have like tainted legendary cataphract/marine armor that might get you a few rep points, otherwise it's just a waste of steel.
high priority stockpile set to take the tainted clothes you want to get rid of. Then make sure you remove the stockpile from your home area, then throw a molotov cocktail at it

Unmodded:

Caravan Method

Step 1) Bring all unwanted items on a caravan
Step 2) (optional) Sell everything that can be sold
Step 3) Before the caravan returns to base, manually drop all unwanted items

Fire Method

Step 1) Build a fire
Step 2) Make bills to burn all clothing that is tainted, low quality, or low durability. Doesn't work on non-burnable items.

Explosive Method

Step 1) Equip Molotov/Incendiary Launcher/Grenade
Step 2) Make a stockpile of unwanted items.
Step 3) Manually target stockpile with explosives. Continue until items are destroyed.

Late Game

Step 1) Reach late game
Step 2) Build a smelter
Step 3) Make bills to burn/smelt all weapons/clothing that are tainted, low quality, or low durability.

Modded:

Mend and Recycle Mod

Step 1) Get a tailoring bench.
Step 2) Create a series of recycle bills to get rid of clothing that is: tainted, awful/poor, low durability. Doesn't work on some types of armor, you still need a normal smelter for those.

There are also various 'destroy item' mods that let you manually destroy items.

Honestly it's a huge PITA to manually draft and make a pawn run around lighting stuff on fire, when you can just find a 20 square-wide pond and put all your tainted armor into it. Yes, it's cute to elaborate on every variation of "shoot stuff to death to make it not show up in inventory anymore" but some people get lost in the trees and forget they were in a forest, when it comes to listing off complicated lists of Rube Goldberg-esuqe methods of doing something that's at base, super simple and does itself on its own if you just don't mess with stuff and move it into a stockpile and let it rot outdoors.

And there are still loads of mods which still allow selling tainted gear (or it was re-added to vanilla) post 1.3. It's not worth much but it helps to clear out the stockpiles. Many of the Mending mods will allow you to sell tainted gear, and/or repair it and clean the taint off. Other ideoligions may not even care about tainted gear and be happy to buy it.

The main thing is that generally, you want an item within a stockpile flagged room before you can try to sell it, which makes inventory mgmt way simpler unless your colony is madly underpopulated or you have really badly wonked work priorities.

And I don't recall the exact number offhand but for some reason I am thinking 40% or 60^ was the cusp where an item's sale value REALLY goes through the floor and at which point it's better to smelt it etc than sell.

And of course rule #1 for reducing the amount of tainted junk lying about: stop butchering human bodies, just haul them whole to a pond with their gear still on.

You mean half my new colonists..! I drafted a guy and put him into my normal "anything goes, if it's normal and over 60%" and he refused to wear pants or a shirt for 12 days before he decided to put on one of the half-dozen pairs of pants and shirts I had lying about in perfect condition. XD

I throw stuff I don't want in a river. You can set stockpiles for just tainted, certain condition levels, even quality making it easier to mass junk useless stuff.

One thing to do is to strip the bodies before you take them to your butcher room. Then forbid the clothes you don't want wherever they fell and they'll deteriorate on their own where they fell (or, if it's in a killbox, you can probably easily light it on fire where it lays once you extract anything else of value)
Hykal Dec 8, 2021 @ 8:11pm
Tainted clothes are only a problem if you strip them in the first place. Otherwise, just chucking the bodies into the crematorium is fine.
