Steam version to DRM free version
Hey, is there any way to get the DRM free version of the game if you have purchased the steam version? Australian censorship has got me thinking that I won't be able to buy future DLCs for the game :/

The Steam version is already DRM free. You can copy it onto a flash drive and play it on any PC you want without requiring Steam. There's no way to switch to a GOG or Ludeon version from Steam though. If you buy the games or DLC from Ludeon you do get a Steam key as well.

Ah right, thank you. I thought steam installed it's own DRM to prevent copying games like that but that is obviously incorrect.

Steam has optional free DRM that many titles from larger publishers use, but most indie games on Steam do not use the DRM. RimWorld just hooks into Steam for Workshop support and will try to run with Steam if possible, but it's not required.

I did that too ty gave that tip when ideology came out and i made a copy of my whole 2.7 game including mods and again during ideology because of minor updates that caused mod problems but did not get its own beta branch, just make sure to back up your saves too they are in another folder.

As a side note, a quick google gave me a site where you can (supposedly) download Steam Workshop items without even needing a Steam account, much less the game it's for.

OBLIGATORY DISCLAIMER I'VE NEVER USED THE SITE AND CAN'T GUARANTEE ITS FUNCTIONALITY USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

{LINK REMOVED}

Just slap your downloaded mods into the game's local mod folder and start it up.

Le edit: note for clarity, I'm suggesting using this as a way to download Steam Workshop mods for the game you've purchased, whether that be the DRM-free version off of the official website, or the version Steam has downloaded for you in the event that Steam rescinds your license to play the game you've paid for, for whatever reason. I'm not suggesting it to be used for anything else.

lol I've been using it for 2+ years

mostly for code review. I download mod, look at file structure or code and after I'm done I dump it. There's nothing wrong with having a mod on your hard drive and it's definitely not dangerous (if workshop file is malware, it's taken down and author is banned)

So for copying the game to a flash drive, how do you do that? just drag the game from the local files into the drive? (sorry if this is a dumb question)

Yes. All DLC is stored in the main game's folder, so that'll also be there to use. Main game configs, mod settings, and saves are all stored in AppData/LocalLow, so those will be there regardless of where the game itself is stored.

Unless you follow the instruction in the readme to change the folder the game will save to.

Yep, you can do that, and I do because I run two different copies of the game (one to play via Steam, the other for personal mod development and tinkering that's resident on a second drive). Not really required for everyday use, though :)
