Bedroom size question
How big should a bedroom be ? 2x1 ? 2x2 ? 3x3 ? 2x3 ? 3x2 ? 4x2 ? 4x3 ? 4x4 ?

Thank you.

5x5 will not get a cramped debuff. Never tried smaller.

Bedroom size is based on the "Expectations" stat, combined with some other stuff like Ascetic, Greedy, Jealous, etc. Expectations is based on your colony's wealth, and it goes up a level at certain amounts of wealth, iirc it's 31k, then 81k, then 180k, etc.. That's just off the top of my head though. This explains expectations cusps https://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Mood#Expectation_moodlets

Expectations also go up in rank if a pawn has a role like a ideoligion priest role, or if they're a noble, etc..

The basis for room size is largely a factor of that, but if you start at 3x4 or so with low expectations, then move up to 4x4, then 4x5, then 5x5, etc you are pretty good. Eventually, 5x6 (30) squares is pretty much the largest you'd ever possibly want in almost any situation. I tend to mark out 5x6 rooms with the planner and then slowly dig to that size over time as I have time, supplies, or when my pawns start complaining.

Hit the "G" button to check room quality stats, which includes room size.

For instance right now in my colony, I've gone up to 5x5 in each room, with nothing but a *very) high quality bed and a table and armchair and a small statue in each room - except for one room which I put a ton of nice stuff into so I can make a visiting baron or duchess/etc happy for quests and such.

For example right now all my pawns have "High" expectations or better, but I made a point to give them pretty nice rooms since I'm sitting fairly comfortable for the moment.

FWIW just above the top edge of that screenshot I also have a hospital with 8 beds (each has a marble end table, and there's a dresser connected to all the beds, since both seem to help fight infection rate and stuff)) and a tube television, and a prison barracks with 4 beds, and a nice chessboard and table and chairs so the prisoners stay semi pleased and not bored.

I usually don't bother with dressers or end tables in bedrooms until I'm pretty rich, because those can skyrocket base value which ends in tears when I get attacked by 70 outlander pirates or some such.

I do 4x6 and line up a side table, double bed, and then a lamp on 4 tile side and then a dresser at the foot of the double bed to get that comfort buff.

I go 5x5 because I can fit 4 in the 11x11 blocks I build around.

Cramped is a temporarly debuff that is just listed while inside a room. There is has no duration and mood does not change when sleeping, so it has no meaning for a bedroom.

Bedroom size is just a factor for the room quality and nothing else. Traits can make them want a certain quality to avoid a mood debuff, but there is no link to expectations. Each level of expectations is 6 mood and each level of room quality is 1 mood after you start getting the positive buff. This is how it basically works: https://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Room_stats#Impressiveness

It solely depends on how high your wanna push the mood. It gets harder and harder to get that 1 extra mood, so basically choose whatever you "need".

i like 4x4 or 6x6 so the double bed is centered on a wall. 2x2 is also fine if doing a larger colony, other mood buffs are easy enough to obtain. currently doing a setup with an impressive barracks and its turning out to work well, the disturbed sleep debuff isn't really an issue.

I don't do fixed shape bedrooms, but I make sure there is enough space in there for a double bed, dresser, two night stands (one is useless but aesthetics), a light, a 2x1 table and 2 chairs, a potted plant or two and a sculpture or two, with enough space left over to not get cramped (furniture detracts from space). The room also could be long enough so people eating at the table don't disturb the people sleeping, depending on if I care enough or not. So like 8 tiles between the bed and the door/table, can save space here making "yin yang" rooms with a narrow part near the door and table and a wider open part for the bed and dresser and such, and invert the layout for the adjacent room so they occupy less space.

It matters when a colonist goes into their bedroom to meditate/pray, clean, repair, upgrade the floors, or happens to walk into a bedroom while "going for a walk." Same with darkness.

There's basically two ways to do rooms, the minimal room where it's just a bed and sculpture with no space to stand meaning the colonist is never in their bedroom other than to sleep. This feels super gamey to me and I never do it. Or a significantly larger room that takes into account colonists spending time in that room to walk to and from bed and meditate and such. I've never found space or basic resources to be an issue in the game so while I understand the minmax minimal rooms can function, I've never seen the point.

I do a 1x2 starting out for just the bed. You get that awful bedroom debuff but its better than using a barracks early on since the debuffs are pretty minimal in comparison. The only issue I had with this is having someone walk by your room while the door was still open. You can get a disturbed sleep debuff from that.

I usually upgrade to a bed and good to masterwork statue for the minimum buffs for bedrooms. I've never done much bigger on a game yet. I like to play efficiently with the least amount of work so my playstyle comes into "play" here. You can play around with dressers and end tables and lights in bedrooms with more space, but it really depends what your going for.

That's a good rule of thumb to go by based on expectations. As it helps manage mood.

I'm trying out 2x1s for bedrooms and I'm in year 3, almost year 4 and they get the awful room debuff of -4. Very easy to clean. I've upgraded a few bedrooms over time, but I still have pawns in 2x1 rooms and its still working out just fine. Even with all the psychic drones and other debuffs out there. I'm not on an extreme difficulty so I haven't really needed to upgrade bedrooms. Also I have a very impressive rec room, dining room, and a sanguine body modder with a Psychic harmonizer implant.
