To boom or not to boom..
The pen is mightier than the.. free roaming animal..?

Seems to me pens have screwed the boomalope industry as they have to be penned, they have been breeding like crazy and I learnt the hard way that boom's still go boom when you try to slaughter, i thought slaughter was okay 'back then' but it sure isn't now..

So what to do?, i want to reduce my pop not wipe em out, but from what i hear the only way to transfer animals from pen to pen is to not allow/allow but then, all my boomalopes will huddle in my shallow grave err pen.. where as before i could just rezone as needed..

I figure i can throw a male in a crypto later on and breed as needed but for now i have..n't got the.. tech, ooh i do, ancient danger ftw..

Slaughtering boomalopes was not okay back then. They went boom. Pen also means no tameness training needed. If you want to kill them, you can free them and then mark them for hunt where as before you would zone them and starve or draft shoot them. You can also just sell them.

You can just sterilise all but 1 female and should reduce reproduction a ton with that for some time. Easier is to just have 2 pens and filter them to male/female only.

Yeah, i'm waiting on a trade ship, started to starve so had to open up my rice and set the auto slaughter lol bad idea, going to set the new pen to only males, i know 3 are pregnant, will get a male out of them for sure..

lol timing, i googled, didn't 'steam' :P

Release sounds good
cheers :)

My male only pen is overridden by the game ignoring my ruling stating
'this pen is already better'

Are they in a "female only" pen?

i completely removed the allowance of boomalopes from the pen they were in and then told my pawn to move the males to the only pen that allowed any boomalopes (only males), game stated they are already in a better pen :P (the new pen is tiny)

my bad, wrong pen marker :D

Can't put animals in crypto caskets :/
( i can i just have to set them up for a surgery first)

Research Firefoam poppers. Build a small area with a stone floor, stone walls, and said firefoam popper. Set up a "butchering zone" in the stone room. Slaughter the boomalope there, replace the firefoam popper after each kill.

Is it cost effective? Not really. Does it save your base, food supplies, and pawns? Absolutely.

cool, good idea
I'd skip the firefoam and just throw grenades/shoot them before locking the door. If the stone room does not lead anywhere important or is standalone I hardly see the need to put out the fire anyway.

Yeah, early on in 1.3 I had a boomalope herd get out of hand. Once I realized how fast the pop was growing and how much they eat I knew things would get out of hand, especially with a bunch of other animals on an arid tile. At first I figured I’d let them breed and sell the extras since I caravan a lot anyway. But then the issue was it took so long to rope the babies -and boomalopes are slow to begin with- that it was sending my caravanners into conniptions. Eventually I ended up sterilizing them and releasing a bunch.

Besides letting the hide and meat burn, I think you get a little chemfuel when you butcher them too. I may be wrong though, I haven't really done herding since before they added the pen system. Most of my chemfuel came from the flesh of my enemies. Or potatoes.

  1. boomalopes breed out of control
  2. boomalopes start to starve out and die
  3. fire spreads to fence and destroys part of it
  4. starving animals all run out and immediately graze
  5. your animal handlers collect up most of the escaped animals while your builder fixes the fence
  6. boomalopes start breeding out of control again

I call it "nature's release valve" xp

Are we, like, an apex predator or? i mean why do all the animals fear us?

This is why all my fences are made from slate or granite

Fences cost 1 resource each and very little work. There isn't really any reason to not make them from stone, except if you wanna abuse decor mechanics.

Or you actually want them to escape because it prevents them from starving. And like you said, fences are very little work to rebuild ^_^
