so.. mortars aye.. reinforced barrel, options/classic/new balance?
if you remove the 'i can build a space ship but to dumb to make a barrel' option it states due to ease of access mortars are 'rebalanced' ..so are the new mortars with the needed barrel worth anything more than old '1 in a 100 chance to hit' mortars? like does the new mortar increase accuracy or?

having to buy a barrel for weaponry that was creatable / existed in ..1794 but unfathomable in the year... 5504 just seems.. i dunno, stupid lol

Apparently the ottomans were using a rudamentary version of them in 1453..

I'm getting ship after ship after ship landing and it's driving me insane, i've always hated them, i just had 1 crash and a few days later another one.. pretty much all i get is stupid ships ( the barrenness you see is from a ship that i just killed before these two ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ landed)

If you want to make mortars harder use 100 plasteel per barrel or something cause waiting for a stupid barrel sucks and these ships are pissing me off

Mortars now require uncraftable reinforced barrels to build and rearm after every 20 shots. Forced miss radius lowered from 13 to 10. All craftable mortar shells have had their crafting recipes lowered by 10 steel. Recipe changed from 75 stuff, 150 steel and 6 components to 50 stuff, 1 reinforced barrel, and 6 components.
Then:
Forced miss radius reduced from 10 to 9. Mortar accuracy now varies by its crewman's Mortar Miss Radius Multiplier.[rimworldwiki.com]

So old miss radius 13 can get down to ~4.

Even the random visitor traders often have ~3 barrels with them. They are extremely common.
Krieger Feb 4, 2022 @ 10:45am
i had seen a couple with the barrels, should have bought them all, ..my random locale has placed me 12 days away from my nearest ally so no walking to buy one, gotta sit tight, n hope the bad thoughts go away hehe
icing on my mech cake, i shoot one both ships wake up, yay, where's an orbital bombardment when you need one, still exists i hope :P lol
13 pikeman 6 lancers n a scyther :D

Personally I just don't use mortars anymore and sell all the barrels I get. It makes sieges pretty rewarding, they sell for like 400 each and you get a few from every siege. You can also murder visitors early on for a bunch, trigger berserk animals to take them out for minimal rep loss.
Krieger Feb 4, 2022 @ 11:18am
I've had one siege so far, it was early game and they were walking toward a ship i was avoiding, i let them handle each other, sadly it was before they managed to place anything down. steel traps do some damage.

There is a classic mortar mode if you have trouble with the barrels.

i was just placing a truck load of steel traps and getting them to walk through em, did it pretty well, but i held out and bought the barrels, one mortar with my best shooter obliterated a ship and 10 or so mechs with less than 12 explosive rounds, where as before i'd have 5+ mortars and hope for the best..

i stand corrected, they still pretty much suck.
my previous comment must have been a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ miracle

nah mortars are still ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥
30 rounds 2 mortars and it's like pissing in the wind, just garbage

ooh the useless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mortar managed to kill 1
i'm pretty sure mortars are used by carnivals in this future

They.. are.. ♥♥♥♥

While i'm here, having set forced target next to paste settings is fkn STUPID let alone not being able to set forced target without having to put a shell in first, just adds to the carnivalesque fail.. it's it's own moving target aaand oops paste non existant settings can't do, pulls shell.. walks away, yay ffs

If it weren't for the utterly ♥♥♥♥ mortars, i don't think i'd have anything to whine about

I dunno man 1 dead and a fee injured is already pretty good in my book for the mortars.

The combat extended mortars are better tho especially if u have someone with binoculars and u aim at the target then they become super accurate
Wish Granter Feb 20, 2022 @ 2:38am
Mortars are still trash. Even with level 20 shooting, you sit theire begging that your mortat doesnt hit your own base while the target is at the end of the map. Luckely you can disable to stupid barrel option in the storyteller settings. Its trash yes.

Enemys (I still bet its coded somewhere :D) always seem to hit your colonists point black while they are running around, with shooting zero, but as soon as one of your guys touch the thing, it shoots backwards off the map.
Krieger Feb 20, 2022 @ 2:52am
i grabbed a mod which shows the range of misfire, if it were a pie chart 80% was covered with enemies and it had to hit the tiny slice with nothing :P it's also the miss chance.. smh
i turned the mod on and off, just as poor as it always was now it just costs more, and these were 2 pawns with 16 in shooting, and it's not like 1 in 5 hits, i'd accept that, it's a piss poor 1 in 10. i ended up using 30+ rounds to kill 1 syther until the missfires killed the ship and they let loose and there is no way in hell these ♥♥♥♥ shoot cans could hit a moving target

Taking into regard that actual mortars in fortified positions are quite accurate. A bit of math, wind direction and preparation and your efficiency is good.

Rimworld mortars are just bad. It is easier to use a transport pod with a pet boomalope and some high explosive shells.
