Berries...yeah with you on that one. They do look pretty though.
Corn is better in the long run as while it does take longer to grow you do get more yield out of it per 'day' growing. So usually after the first season or two I switch my rice fields to corn.
Potatoes are good if you have subotimal growing locations as their growth is less impacted by the fertility of the soil so can grow decently even on gravel or other types.
EDIT: just add there is less 'work' to be done for corn due to its grow length, with rice you need to keep picking/planting but since corn takes so long to grow you don't need to do it as often.
For some reason cooking meals results in food poisoning no matter what if those food seemed to have been 'contaminated' in any way, like if the weather was hot and exposes it for a while, before it gets hauled.
When your stock are high => Corn for increased efficiency
Supposedly potatoes contain all the nutrition a human needs, so you can live off potatoes and only potatoes your entire life if you don't care about the quality of your food. That would be an interesting niche for taters to fill, if full nutrition gets implemented.
also as a side note i find my freezer is more annoyingly cluttered up by have about 10 to 20 different stacks of meat due to meat being seperate by animal type rather than being cluttered by having a lot of a single type of food, but i guess massive amounts of food is more of an end game problem.
great starter, when you need food fast, get rice but its time consuming IMO
Basically:
Gravel: Potatoes or berries
Soil: Whatever, but rice grows fastest.
Rich soil: Rice if you need it asap, corn if you have time.
When you have plenty of food, healroot and other nonfood plants take priority on rich soil.
