so it could be you haven't furnished it well or it is very dirty. pets tend to increase mess in the areas they travel to
Yes, there is an unused bed. Maybe I should uninstall it and see what happens.
Removing the spare bed should make it a Bedroom rather than Barracks, so the next step is fixing up the 'Awful' part.
There should be useful info on https://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Room_stats#Impressiveness , and the links on that page. You don't need to do a bunch of maths when figuring out room values, as any amount of dirt is gonna skew the end result. Just give them space to live in, ideally with room for a fancy sculpture, and make the floors better than bare dirt; and if you're building into a hill/mountain, Smooth Stone is also an option.
As others have said, it's the extra bed in the room that's not being used.
Animal Sleeping beds don't count against that.
Also - The spaciousness of the room should offset mood penalties in general (it sounds like it, at least) but they'll still complain if it's ugly, so clean it up and put nice furniture in there. A few well-made chairs will push the room value up a bit if you have some laying around.
You can use the Beauty overlay in the bottom right-hand corner. The icon that looks like a sideways face/eye/whatever... You'll see it untoggled. Toggle it on and a heat-map with values will be around your cursor. Hover that around their room to find out what's causing the problem (Ugly). Then, fix it. :)
The *only* way it will count as a private room despite 2 occupants is when the two are married/lovers AND share a double bed AND there are no other beds, including unallocated beds, int he same room.
Yep, that's what happened. It was still better though, as awful bedroom was like 2 points less than the awful barracks modifier.
