RimWorld

For the ... third or fourth time now: Mod suggestion: Gladiators
Posting on general since no one seems to look very often at Workshop Discussions -_- There is a prison arena mod on the workshop. It's pretty simple and enjoyable. Compatible with everything I've played with so far. It let's you define a spot to be used by prisoners as an arena. By clicking on the spot you can also 'expand' and 'shrink' the fighting area around it. Wardens will carry prisoners set to fight matches into the ring, and those watching it will gain recreation. Fight ends when one prisoner is downed. It's not the most efficient means of getting recreation, idk if the medical care outweighs the enjoyment gain, but a lot of people can watch the fight so a lot of your pawns can get their recreation fix at once. You can also place weapons inside the arena and the prisoners will use them.
The point of this is: ITS A PRISONER ARENA! MAYBE ITS NOT PRACTICAL BUT ITS COOL
And yet, this mod still has things on the to-do list and it appears to be yet another forgotten mod. Been months now, doubt it'll get an update. So it'd be nice if someone else decided to make a prison arena mod, cause literally there is no other which surprises me greatly. It'd need to be compatible with the obvious stuff like Humanoid Races, CE probably, those sorts of things. The things left on the to-do list for the original mod were:
Animal fights
Mass Brawls
Team battles (added that one myself)
Everything in between
Scoreboard
Bets
Possibly being able to pre-equip fighters (another add-in)
Seriously, imagine if you built a base that was a coliseum, and you just kept a number of prisoners on-hand for the fights, and you could send up a human with genetic implants against a Thrumbocat from GR. Awesome. So someone could simply build on the original mod or do something completely custom that might be more efficient. I just wanna see this happen. Why does no one else :(

Learn to code.
Make it happen.
Be the change you want to see in the world.

Contact the mod author or check the license the mod was released under - or both. That should aid in a first look at updating the mod.

Can't code
Have tried
Endlessly. So that's not much of an option

Sound like a quite completed mod. The mod author most likely satisfied with the mod so he or she havent been updating it. Plus, if it's only been a few months, then it isn't really abandoned. The modder is probably just being lazy. Also, can I have the link to the mod?

Being satisfied with your work IS NOT somehow "lazy". Rather, it's known as "enjoying the fruits of your labor". If the mod creator was actually lazy, ipso facto there would be no mod.

Exactly. Modders do stuff because they want to, because they enjoy it. If they decide they want to stop suddenly, for any reason at all, that's their right, since it's their creation after all.

Anyway, OP, if you don't want to learn how to mod, then your best bet is to contact the mod author and politely make your requests. If they don't respond, don't take it personally. Just move on.

It's actually not that complicated I'd think. Doesn't have much to it. And if the author were satisfied then why would there be a list of to-dos still on the post -_- Yeah true modders do what they do because they want to, but I'm just asking for someone else to take the reins on an arena mod. This is, again, surprisingly, literally the only arena mod for Rimworld on the workshop. And even if I do manage to contact him I heavily doubt I'll get a response anytime soon. Guy has been offline for three days. Y'know, there are quite a few mods that have been forgotten and then reinstituted by other modders with updates to them. I have just been asking if anyone would make one for this case.

You realize no one but that mod's author has any right at all to "take the reins," unless they explicitly *grant* that right to someone, correct?

graaaah true

But technically it doesn't even need to be copied. An arena mod is a general idea that could be done by anyone. I ain't exactly asking for someone to make this mod with the updates but make an arena mod with some actual depth to it.

You can read. You can type. You likely have a PC. Therefore, you can "code."

Have tried

"Trying" never, ever, stops. "Trying" is the act of "Doing." Mistakes will be made. As long as you're not coding PLCs for a nuclear power plant, you'll get a chance to learn from them. :)

Endlessly. So that's not much of an option

The only thing that's constant in this world is "change." Until the heat-death of the Universe, there will always be change. And, even after that... probably still a tiny bit of change, too.

The point of all the above - The number of computer game players that reached a point where they wanted to have some computer game "something or other", but couldn't find exactly what they wanted, comprises a significant number of beginning coders who opened up an instruction book or began coursework to learn to code.

Some interesting tutorial vids, here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMSAIShZ_Hw&list=PLxC_KFYk8xiCpIfM3GUXN4GmEVimxcx3P

There are plenty of other vids/tutes available online, too. And, then there's Ludeon's forums :

https://ludeon.com/forums/index.php?board=19.0

The only reason I wrote the above is that you seem very enthusiastic about this particular mod and the inclusions you'd like to see and it may be that it's never going to get those added features. Such is the way of mods... But, given a bit of effort, you may be able to add these things yourself. You may or may not be able to release it as your own or take over stewardship of the mod, but at least you might be able to create what you want so badly for your own gameplay.

There's no reason you have to actually do anything other than hope the mod gets these additions. But, if you want them that badly, there's no reason at all why you couldn't move forward to satisfying that need yourself.

You can also dig into that other person's mod to see how it works and then just make a patch for it to add the things you want. RimWorld mods work by patching in new code to the game. That's what his/her mod does, and there's nothing stopping you from just adding more stuff that builds on top of what's already been added.

Yes there is; that code *is not* public domain.

It doesn't need to be made public domain to make a patch for it. It only needs to be public domain if you wish to include code from that project. A mod-mod doesn't generally require that.
