Stone v wood
I keep seeing videos of ppl building work benches and butchering tables from stone or steel in areas of a lot of wood...

why is this?

does it give some kind of extra crafting or meat/leather yield?
add to a room?
or is it just for fire resistance?

For me this happens when my colony is in a biome that is low on wood resources. In my recent desert colony wood is as scarce as hens teeth, so I have to build my production tables and beds out of something else.

Material of a crafting station has no effect on productivity or yields. It does factor into the stats of some furniture though, stone is a bad material to make beds with for example as it lowers sleep efficiency.

If you can build something out of marble that adds extra beauty to it, but the only vanilla production building that can be made with stone is the crematorium and stone is the only option for it.

Steel is really easy to get, so steel vs wood really doesn't make a difference unless there's little to no wood on a map. It might just be a cosmetic choice, I'd rather build stations out of steel because they look more industrial.

Material that you build with does have some effects depending on what material used, primarily wood is just used for quick building while each stone has its own unique benifit while also being completely invincible to fire. Building some things out of wood really doesn't matter but when the whole base is wood you're just asking for a fire to wipe out everything you own. aside from that there are limited resources on each map tile w/o mods so most people will save steel and build with stone as stone can only be used for building or art while steel is pretty much used in every single defensive structure, weapon and armor.

Research stations can be built from stone. Very useful for ice sheet maps! I also want to add that jade beds do not lower sleep efficiency. As some see jade as a type of stone in this game which is sad as it has vastly different properties.

Jade doors for example open way faster than stone doors and are unflammable. Albeit not much more sturdy than steel.

It is also more beautiful than equivelant silver structures while being tougher and also does not increase colony wealth as much as silver does.

Ah, right. Ya I usually set up my simple research benches before I get any stone, been a while since I saw that option pop up.

availability of resources, as well as aesthetics (match the furniture and other stations)

Depending on your mod choices it could be many things, a mod i used allows me to make porcelain, which in turn increased beauty and reduced food poisoning being a butchering table. Vanilla wise, it's all about what materials you have on hand.

For me, its fire resistant, start from wood gradually replace with stone

^-- This. There's really no other generally recognized sane reason to place another importance on material choice. But, players can also set goals for themselves and choose to use unique materials if they want to.

Jade doors are the weakest material you can make doors out of, at only 80 health. Steel doors have literally twice as much health, 160.

Wooden doors -> Granite Autodoors (or jade external doors, if autodoors is too far away) works pretty well for me too. :-)
Internal doors can be wood, and wooden Autodoors are *fast*.
