How to make a good barracks?
I want to build a single barracks for all colonists... I deslike building new rooms every time a new guy joins. What would be a good size? Would it depend of the number of residents?

I always built 12 - 18 4x4 rooms within a week of the start, soon as the cotton grows and i finish them its a nice mood bonus to have. Especially lateish game when you can afford royal beds, aswell as ornate pot plants etc. But for a barracks a extremely impressive one probably gives a +2 mood? Just make it big, probably 7 x 20. Use the pathway inbetween the beds to put small or large art. Make the flooring something nice of course. Boom, +2 barracks.

I don't think there's a negative thought for any more than 2 pawns in one room, but the usual things apply:

- Good colonies have upwards of 10 pawns. I would make room for about 20-30 though. I would probably make this bedroom 18x6 to 26x10 and line either wall with beds. Making it long and narrow stop you from needing support pillars.
- End tables give a comfort buff if they're placed next to the head of the bed. I would leave space for these
- Leave space for dressers. I think one dresser can apply to multiple beds so you only need a couple in the middle of the room.
- Statues, carpet, and regular cleaning will ensure they find the room beautiful, and their "Slept in a good barracks" thought will overwhelm their "Shared room" debuff.
-Toss out all beds below Good. Uninstall the bed, then you can sell them to general goods traders. You want that beauty score high.
-Light and temperature control the room. Essential to fight the debuffs.

Sadly because this game was coded by a spoiled city kid, your snowflake colonists will get massive morale penalties from living in a barrack, no matter how nice it is. Not worth it.
5x5 rooms, bed, dresser, light and night stand, all excellent or masterwork, bed always made out of wood for comfort bonus. I like to do silver tiles and jade for the floors in the room. 4x4 jade in the corner with the last strip being silver tiles. Makes the room look better

The last time I made a barracks was probably in b18. I don't know if the values have changed since then, but a 'wonderfully impressive' large barracks that slept 20, with carpet, dressers, end tables, and a sculpture or two gave a -1 debuff.

You're also going to get numerous disturbed sleep debuffs. Even a plain bedroom would be better, let alone the mood boost you'd get with any sort of impressive bedroom.

But I hear ya. 30 5x5 bedrooms take up a LOT of space. More than half the base usually. And having to make more after you have your walls and defenses situated, just compromises everything and is just a pain.

So if your going that route, make it large, put carpet down, have all the furniture excellent quality, and add a few sculptures. If the rest of your colony is impressive, then the mood buffs should be good enough anyway.

They don't like to make thier colonists happy and are then upset about thier virtual colonists being upset.... it seems like a wierd issue to have really.

Either care about the virtual colonists and meet thier expectations or just ignore them and be the all mighty dictator that we can all be!

Let the walls be slathered in the blood of foes and allies! Let the halls run with gore and vomit!
(except for the kitchen since food poisoning is no joke)
And finaly leave the corpses rotting on the field to warn all who come that no one is safe even if they are your own colonists!

A 4x4 is the average size for a room for at least 1 colonist. A barracks is bad since they get a negative debuff because they got to share it.

If you want an impressive bedroom, within that 4x4, have a double bed, light, dresser, end table, sculpture, pot plant.

I always only use barracks in my games, no seperate rooms. The only negative to mood is disturbed sleep and that is not much. My pawns usually have %100 mood. Extremely impressive barracks give +1 mood. There is also mood bonus for dinner and rec rooms. I build barracks, dinner and rec all in one single room.
