People joke, but there is some potential evidence that the multiplayer update is going to use dedicated servers in some way. I can't think of a reason why it would need servers if not for some longer term persistence. It might not be real-time shared planets, but could be some sort of interaction between many players on the same server.

They're going to shard out their server and run multiple instances of "RimSpace-Station 13?" I can't think of a more appropriate Rimworld Multiplayer experience...

It would make the trading economy more realistic if there were real people trading. If I mass produce chairs and hunt rat meat, I can sell it to the AI forever. With real people, there would be real supply and demand. After you develop the colony you can put buy orders for raw materials and caravans will come to you and you sell high tech stuff to undeveloped colonies.
