Instead try to take an area inside a mountain or atleast surrounded by many boulders as enemies will try to mine their way though.
Building at the Border of the map is a bad idea unless is a mountain base of course; The natural rock walls cover at least one edge of the map where raids cant happen naturally.
Because the game (at least in vanilla, and no dev tools) you cant build a the borders; there is a 10 spaces (correct me if im wrong) around the border where you can't build anything so you cant cover artificially those gaps, so Raids can still happen naturally on borders.

That way, when a raid shows up, they have to bust through the wall somewhere to get in. That takes time. Enough time for all my gunners to get to that area and prep a welcome. :)
