I keep them around for how fast they make caravan travel as mounts though, not as attack animals. So I only need a small herd. I can't imagine feeding an "army" of them. I barely keep up with the half dozen that I keep for riding with 3 growers.
It is very funny to let thrumbos fight the enemy though, and whenever they die it's thrumbo steak for everyone.
Someone getting a nice thrumbofur jacket to wear along with those steaks too.
Killing thrumbos gives me the horn
The main issues with breeding an "army" of them is getting a breeding pair in a colony is a pretty huge hurdle and could take many years depending on RNG, then it takes them over a year to go from conception to maturity, and then you would need several very skilled handlers to keep them tame and trained up. For a very long term game though, yes, very doable, and quite worthwhile for the thrumbofur.
Saving Inspiration-Taming if you can until you get lucky to get a Thrumbo event and using the Word of Inspiration Psycast specifically to get Inspiration-Taming when they show up makes the taming process quick, painless and without any chance of failure. so the only real RNG hurdle is getting access to the Thrumbos in the first place.
For me, at least, those events are not entirely uncommon. The biggest hurdle is, imo, not RNG but getting at least one person high enough in the Animal skill to tame them in the first place. Just takes time.
The issue for me is when animal breeding rates got "buffed". Thrumbo breeding used to be story intrigue, now they breed like rabbits pretty much.
As others said, food is an issue, but then if you have a map with a long grazing period, that also is moot.
...But I still really dislike how quickly animals breed all the same. I understand it is a balance to return on investment for meat ideologies, but still, thrumbos breed way to fast.
Although Thrumbos now breed far faster than before 1.3, it still can take years to get the numbers you need to reliably use them against late game raids. If you stay on the planet for ten years, then they would be quite powerful, but if you leave after, say, four years then they will be helpful, but it would be hard to get that many.
Thrumbos would probably be great for the Archonexus ending. In that case, tame them in your first base and bring four pregnant females and one male to the second base.
