Multiple Pens - Need Help - Animals not respecting my authoritah!!!
I have two pens set up for different types of animals. In the middle is a place where they all sleep.

Both pens are enclosed and set for the specific animals. I have egg layers on one side, and just about everything else on the other including bison, pigs, etc.

I've also tried assigning them by zone which doesn't work either. I have a feeling it's some rule I'm not aware of that's causing the issue. Basically, it looks like below with E being egg layers, S being shared sleeping and G being grazers. Both areas are confirmed to be enclosed and show the amount of food in relation to each animal. Ideas?

If you connect all 3 areas via animal doors, that just makes it 1 single pen.

Not true. They are three separate areas with different stats.

Then you would have three pens. The issue is your shared sleeping area. Put a wall separating the room in two halves, with an animal flap leading north into the egg laying area, and a flap on the other room's south wall into the grazing area. How can they respect your authoritah when your proclamation is "go ahead and mingle and walk where you want"?

Because I want them to both be happy AND respect my authoritah?

Is that too much to ask?

I'll give it a try.

I get it, trust me I do. There are free range chickens, ducks, and geese here on my farm that are constantly getting into the pasture with the cows and horses, or the pig pen. It shouldn't be an issue, but welcome to computer programming.

The pen system works with a field and a singular set of buildings per field (a barn and potentially a freezer for hay or kibble). Adding more buildings and fields to it does just that: increases the size and spread of that one pen. If you want to separate animals by function (egg layers, milkers/meat producers/pack animals) and not have to worry about them respecting your zones then they need their own pen systems.

While we're on it, I suppose animal areas no longer works for penned animals. I know it works for dogs fine still. But they're the only one that I've seen actually stay in their assigned areas.

I'm also using a ton of mods, so who knows what is going on in my save.

I also just restarted the game, and ran into the dreaded sudden lag that wasn't there when I saved my game last (and without making any changes). Haven't been able to fix it so I might be starting a new colony anyway.

But I'll follow your advice and segregate like southern democrat.

:)

Sorry he is right an animal door permits an animal to walk thru it just like a whole in a fence permits an animal to walk thru it...

If you have an animal pen and you make a hole in your fence they will run out and try to escape...

Well you have created an escape path for them to escape into the neighboring pen...

They don't care you have assigned that pen to a specific animal in the least bit the only people that understand they are assigned to the area is your animal handlers....

Correct animals area's no longer work for Ranching animals but still works for some animals like cats and dogs and rabbits... I am sure their are more animals that fall under that category but its safe to say they are not the type of animals you would have on a farm....
