Pump Shotgun and Chain Shotgun: who uses them?
I was looking at the stopping power of these weapons (3) and what that actually does. Depending on the Body size of a target, if your weapon has a higher stopping power than the targets body size they will get slowed to the full duration of a hit. Which I think was 1 second or 2 seconds.
I thought this was a really useful weapon to have when dealing with animals in hunts or raids with melee attackers coming after your ranged units and your melee guys are off doing something else.
Even muffalo have a slightly lower body size (like 2.5ish) than the stopping power of a shotgun and will get significantly slowed by it.

Anyway I thought to have 1 or 2 pawns with one to help fill gaps in other weapons weaknesses. I was wondering if anyone has had any good testing on these.

So two trolls and mod advice. not exactly rolling out the red carpet on people who've actually tested these.

Shotguns are great against insects.

They are bloody good for obliterating anyone who gets past your melee pawns and is about to reach your ranged. Gives you a little longer to reposition the others or retreat behind the next line of your defences.

I use pump shotguns (and the real world variants from the RH/CP mods like the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500) quite often. They're good for early- to mid-game, and even later. Where they really excel is slowing down those charging tribals armed with knives and hatchets long enough for your revolver-equipped colonists to shoot them down. Pumps are also fairly quick on the cooldown meaning you can get off a decent number of shots before it gets to melee.

Chain shotguns, though? I tend to avoid them. Getting multiple bursts is nice, but the miss rate can be problematic. The rule of averages says you should get at least one hit per 3-round burst... but if you're just shooting for average, a pump is better. At least in my experience. And the range isn't long enough to mean your misses are potentially going to hit another enemy, like with an assault rifle or LMG.

I don't have tables of data to back up my claims, just personal experience. So make of it what you will!

I sometimes have a commando unit or two that use chain shotguns, though I prefer the pawn to have the tough trait before I volunteer them to the position. I armor them up heavily and give them jetpacks to help them close in on the enemy quick. They are pretty decent supports alongside melee units, and rather efficient hit and run units against mechanoid bases (to deal with the bigger turrets). They are the main reason I never needed to consider using the Earthquake psycast to get rid of mechanoids, lol.

Chain shotguns are really good mid-late game while pump shotguns are only good early game IMO.

I have a mod that makes shotgun shoot out a spread of pellets so I use them a lot. All those tiny gunshots adds up quickly with the chain shotgun.

No not at all. I'll take personal experience over guesses. This is really helpful. Honestly I hear so much about heavy smgs and charge rifles/lances that I started to wonder if anyone actually had some shotties in the group. Nice to see they get some use.

Yeah it sounds like the heavy gear on that pawn would be really useful. Didn't think of giving one a jetpack, but I love this idea.

Chain Shotguns are the strongest gun in the game, not even for stopping power, they just have higher targeted DPS than any other gun by quite a bit. They work amazingly well in close combat, choke point defenses, against infestations, etc. I use them all the time.

The only weapons in the game that have higher DPS are like legendary persona weapons. Or if you can get every bullet from a mini-gun to hit something (somewhat doable against large packs of enemies).

Thanks for your input!

@Astasia and ShadowTani both bring up good points. The way I set up my defenses, most of my engagements are medium- to long-range, so I don't get the benefits of a chain shotgun over a pump. But if you combine a chain shotgun with Locust armor or Cataphract and a jetpack? That'd give you a hard-hitting squad that you could jump behind or use to flank the enemy missile troops.

Chain shotgun is the shizzle at short range stoppage. The single shot not so much, I usually trash them right away.
