if you ve got bunch of steel chunks you could build smelter but if you dont have bunch it wont pay off as early as you want

try to settle with a new mining colony

Mine steel deposits if you landed somewhere rocky, smelting steel chunks / unwanted weapons can also provide a small amount too, deconstructing abandoned stuff, if you get lucky you can raid a steel mining camp, and you can always just buy some from traders / outposts.

Remember that steel is very heavy though so you're going to need a lot of caravan capacity.

You can also research the deep drill and scanners, and scan for steel deposits on your own map or other world map tiles.

i mean he prob doesnt have the resources to build those stations in the first place

Don't forget to look around for randomly generated steel structures/floors which you can deconstruct.

Does that matter? The OP asked for ways to get more steel? Since other people listed a number of ways, I listed the one that wasn't mentioned, so that the OP would know of numerous ways?

well sure its just that if he is desperate enough he needs ways that needs less of an investment in steel since he lacks that in the first place y'naw

Trade is probably another one. Probably more useful if you have a comms console. Befriend other factions and call in bulk goods traders whenever you need steel.

¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ It's an investment that tends to pay off, imho. But it is fourth on my list.

1) Mine compact steel
2) Deconstruct steel buildings, remove steel floors
3) Trade for steel
4) Deep drill

Edit: Or maybe fifth on the list, since I forgot smelting. Mine, deconstruct, trade, smelt, deep drill. That sounds better?

Turn max amount of colonies to 2 or higher, then create a second colony solely for the purpose of mining. Send the mined stuff to your first base.

Get the Set Up Camp mod, and then go mining in the neighboring hex!

If you have ideology there are mining camps that show up pretty regularly with steel. As mentioned steel is very heavy though and moving it around without a large number of pack animals or cargo pods isn't really viable, unless you only need like 100.

You can call in a trade caravan if you have a comms console, outlander (not tribal) bulk goods caravans usually have like 250-400 steel on them for cheap.

I buy them from ships and just build with wood until I get the coms. I turn beer into steel with two brewery.
