River Defense
How do you do it? Okay in Mountain terrain you can take advantage of said mountains to make good funnels but on flat land with few rock formations, how do you protect that large gap in your wall? Make a wall in the river? Other side? Fall back posistions? The river itself doesn't really lend itself to kill box set ups but good sniper pawns could take anything that isn't zerg rush. ...Oh wait.

Granted I rarely get to the point of zerg rushes anyway. But I'm just curious.

Pawns cannot walk cross deep ocean water. You could replace river to deep ocean water using editor. Even make moat of deep ocean water around your base with a bridge full of traps. Bridge cannot be built on deep ocean water, have to be other water type underneath the bridge. I think there's terraforming mod at workshop.

Better try "Impassable chest-deep water", makes all the above mentioned very much easier...

you can build wood walls on bridges in the shallow water to prevent passage.

Its a good idea to analyse where enemies enter your map and what route they take, then build walls all around and leave a nice opening to cover your bases, its never going to be super easy when you have no wall to put your back against but rivers can help bigtime early game, I would recommend stacking rock chunks in the river and perhaps using it as an early game entrance or for a massive time lag to prevent enemies from crossing it. I've used many rivers and water ponds to defend with and they're almost always more of a nuisance than a benefit. I would focus on thick walls and trying to create tunnels that will attract enemies in. Also if you're going to place a wall on the river you should keep deep water tiles outside the wall to totally prevent enemies from using that area to enter/shoot from. (also deep water can be used in front of a shooter postition to stop enemies from closing on them in melee due to deep water being impassible) just make them boxed in with a door and they wont be attacked thru the sandbags if they're behind some gnarly water, shallow works too would recommend rock chunk storage zones for that tho.

I have a weird half killbox thing going on where they have to walk thru the mud getting lit up by turrets to get to the open side of my base.

I could also just debug 50 long range turrets or morters and deal with it that way. I'm not a big fan of using debug outside of small asethtic choices(like one more space to have a perfect cube room).

Make a wall around most of the colony with an opening in the river, use bridges and wood walls to force anyone entering your base from that river side to have to cross through a wide point in it while your colonists hang out in cover along the shore shooting at them. Have doors around the other parts of the walls for your colonists so they don't have to wade across the river to get anywhere.

If you give raiders an open path into your base, they will usually take it, even if that path goes across a river or through a bunch of traps. "Into your base" though means you need to have stuff they can path to to try to destroy, like power generation, crops, coolers, etc. You can't have those things all blocked off behind walls and doors otherwise raiders don't see any targets and just start bashing on the nearest walls and doors.

This obviously doesn't do much for sappers or breachers.
