Taking them on caravans is going to be tricky though, unless they have good traits for that.
And if you have Pain is a Virtue as a meme, randomly beat them up every few days whenever their mood is really low. They love that.
If you cannot support their lifestyle just yet, dismiss them from the position for the time being.
I have the raider precept that gives a +12 on a recent conquest - Cool, but it doesn't cover for the higher expectations when you consider that my guy has the tortured artist trait, which is a pain. I don't have much of a choice, they're the only one with decent social skills. I have only medieval entertainment options available, but if I don't have someone assigned to the role everyone gets a -5. That just makes things harder for everyone else.

this sorta sums up rimworld at its best. When the systems intertwine to make the "best" path not immediately clear I think the game is most fun/interesting. The dlc does a decent job of throwing more complexity by adding a lot more positives and negatives to consider when managing your colony.
