Is research speed just stupid long on tribe if you have no people with Intelligence?

Yes. Try to get a pawn with good passion by kidnapping, recruiting, etc. If they are unable to do research, then that's just unlucky but you had a change to get someone with intelligence in the people select screen. Otherwise techprof subpersonas can give you research.

I agree with Fyredrakon,
but there's also the fact that tribes start in a different technology age than other scenarios.
Try to do what Fyre said and build more than 1 research table, coz this ♥♥♥♥ gonna take time on tribe :D

Starting with a Tribe and nobody to research... OUCH. Never again.

Research is probably the easiest to level. I pretty much just throw anyone into it if they don't have any important skills.

Kinda yes but not really. Once you can afford it you should assign a colonist as a full time researcher. Triblas research at half speed? Assign two colonists to research!

Research can hurt on tribal, but usually I tend to be able to do fine by throwing everyone who is not doing money making tasks on it during winter and it seems to go fine. This typically means making a few extra tables but they do not go out much in winter anyway due to predators always wanting to give them mouth hugs

In three of my last four runs I played tribal or naked brutality tribal. I was nomadic/settled on a decent tile and I didn’t worry about research early on except for complex clothing and stonecutting. In the last two I didn’t even have a starting pawn with an intellectual passion. I was probably in year three before I bothered researching electricity. I feel like once you’re stable you can throw down a bunch of benches and crank it out and until then it’s good to keep wealth down so there’s not that much I want to build.

I'm at least a year in and only halfway to electricity. I'm dying over here with this research speed.

Lol, “I’m dying” comically or literally? With Rimworld you gotta ask.

Are you on an extreme map? Not that I’m blaming you for wanting it, but you don’t really need electricity as long as you have wood for your stove. Raw veg lasts a long time.

Also, can you set up a bunch of benches?

Research is literally one of the easiest things in the game. Even a pawn with no passion can research. Plop down three or four and you'll speed through the tree in no time.

What's really funny is that I've noticed an actual hump with research. Starting with a bunch of dumb tribals, even researching basic stuff takes forever. Like, it's Decembruary of 5501 and you've only managed to research Complex Clothing.

But as soon as you push over that 3200 hump for Electricity, nothing seems to take as long anymore. It feels like it takes quadrums to research Electricity, but Microelectronics takes only a handful of days.

I think it's because by the time you're ready to tackle Electricity and get over that hump, your researcher's brain has swollen to three times its normal size. Or maybe it's just tribal magic.

Yeah, let's go with tribal magic.

Primitive workbenches including simple research bench have penalty to work speed. Once you get over electricity you get access to workbenches without penalty = colonists get things done faster = more time to research. Microelectronics isn't that far away from electricity and with it you can build a research bench without speed penalty.

yeah it's not meant to be a starting scenario for new players.
Leg Day Jul 27, 2021 @ 11:48pm
Nope. It's way wayyy too fast. I start my researcher at 0 and give the slow tech ideology. Within 30 days she's at 10 int skills

Yeah, it's one of the reasons they warn you before embarking that a Tribal start is harder than a Crashlanded start. My current colony is a bunch of Tribal Transhumanists, who get the Research Specialist unit with +70% research speed, and it still took me a year or two to get electricity.

Once you get Neural Supercharger stations and Neurocalculator implants things speed up quite a bit, but until then, it's slow going.
