there is a self defense mode, colonists only flee by default

You're not taking scale into account. Animals on the Rim are a lot larger than their earth-bound counterparts.
These are 30-pound rats/gerbils/rabbits/squirrels. The small bugs are the size of pit bulls, the megaspiders are human sized. Pound for pound these can and will eat your puny colonists.
