Ideology 1.3 and issue with caravan on animals
So i went on a run to an ancient site to raid it for treasure. I came back and because of how pens work I can't seem to find a way to move my animal full of stuff where i want it to go.

Can I use the caravan spot to get a work around to manually set an animal where I want or is pen markers the only way?

I haven't started a 1.3 / ideology run yet but I've been wondering about this as well.

When you caravan, do you have to walk back and forth to the pens when loading/unloading?

What happens when you settle a new tile? Do the animals just wander around until you build a pen?

When you attack a base, they will just wander around, however, they won't leave you like they would in your base map. Raiders also tend to ignore them, so that's fine. You don't need to pen them in because when you check on the world map, you can auto-load the loot in the caravan menu.

1. The pawns will rope a bunch of animals to the caravan packing spot. If there's none, the game will designate a random one and usually it's bad, so pick a good packing spot (close to your warehouse/freezer)
2. They will automatically haul stuff into the caravan, one stack at a time.
3. Then they bring the animal to the edge of the map and leave.

4. They will wander around for a day or so, and if you don't pen them in, they will no longer be considered yours so build a pen. No need for a fence, just build a pen in a room and that is sufficient.

Still doesn't answer my question, but while we are on the subject of what you just said, is there is a reason to pen animals at all? I have pawns that need to train animals like hauling without having to travel half way across the map to find that wandering animal.

Anyway, no i said i came back, meaning I cam back from a site I raided. Now that I'm home I want to offload my donkey near my storage or inside, however my pen is not near the storage door and I don't know how to manually get the donkey to go inside my storage area so I can unload without having to unload one item at a time.

I used to just be able to do this with zones, but with pens I'm limited. Is there a work around?

Animals that are not penned will leave your colony after 24 hours - something I've explained. They will return to the wild. Animals that can be zoned act as they do in 1.2.

Technically I suppose you could make a pen marker in your warehouse and force the pack animal there and drop the stuff manually then move them to the normal pen afterwards.

yeah i made a 2nd one. it still says my donkey is only allowed in pen marker 1. I'm not able to move him.

Pen marker is the only way. Best way I've found is to make a pen marker in my storage room. which normally is set to allow no animals. when the caravan returns, allow the caravan animal types in the storage-room pen and disallow the same types from the normal pen. Is this more cumbersome than before where the individual animals could be zoned to the storage room(s)? yes, but it isn't that much worse.

I also find myself building a secondary 'pen' wall a little inside my normal outer walls so that when sappers inevitably destroy a wall segment the animals don't escape- there are def some usability costs to the pen system.
