There was another thread that said their treelovers cut down trees in growing zones, but my treelovers don't do that.
So I think we might be operating on different definitions of "treelover"? I also had the Gauralan tree ideology/precept in my Ideology, plus the highest impact tree meme.
Gauralan connection: Strong
Trees: Desired
Nothing else that involves nature in any way. They most certainly did cut down trees when planting crops. And the harvesting of this fibercorn gave everyone a -25 debuff.
Try adding the precept "Tree cutting: Abhorrent". My pawns then won't even cut trees when I tell them to. And if I put a growing zone anywhere, they will simply ignore the trees and not plant crops in a one cell circle around the tree.
EDIT: Also: it might be the abhorrent tree cutting, or it might be that highest impact Tree ideology (below the persona animals)
Yeah... going fully anti tree cutting, abhorrent style, is most definitely a challenge!
I also didn't want to use stones/metal for my structures/furniture, but I was forced to use those, at least at the start, as I plan to slowly replace that for the fully tree-hippy community.
I really wish the "no cutting" option in growing zones meant pawns wouldn't cut down trees that were ready for harvest. I know it's useful for saving naturally spawning berry bushes or ambrosia inside normal fields, but my ability to farm anything at all is severely limited if I start a tree loving colony.... I might *have* to make tree cutting abhorrent as a workaround. I hope that does work, as Iskander said.
Let us know if that worked or not.
I'm genuinely curious, as I've seen multiple people complaining about problems with tree-lovers cutting trees and hating it, while mine aren't giving me any such problems. There has to be a variable that causes the difference in behaviour.
Looking forward to the day when a mod gets added to turn trees into living wood walls, so you can build with/around them. Until then, I guess I'm just waiting for trees to die so I can build into that space....
Getting back to the original question, though. The Tunneler meme gives the flooring type Fungal Gravel that acts as a grow zone that can be placed under overhead mountain tiles. Trees need open space to grow, but fibercorn doesn't, so it's a way to grow wood underground. On top of that, fibercorn only needs 30% light to grow instead of 51% like normal plants, so they get enough illumination from a darklight torch.
