Picking a tile and what to consider
I find myself having tons of fun, but often failing to even get to mid-game because I want to try something new or improve on a major oversight I made in my colony. I guess this is the blessing of being new to a game, but I also don't want to keep making the same mistakes.

When picking a tile on the globe view map;

1) If there is a road on your tile, does that mean there is more traffic from other factions, and even more so, do other factions travel on the road without interacting or messing with my base? and can you attack these travelers of the road if they exist?

2) Do you need a pretty big river to be able to research and install hydro power? Is "chest deep" deep enough?

3) At the risk of sounding like an idiot; if you choose an ocean tile, can pirates arrive from the water? I have even seen some island tiles and was wondering that.

4) If you want to try raiding ideo, do you have to choose a tile that is near many other colonies and do you ever go closer than 4 tiles?

thanks

1) No but you can get a mod that will increase traffic if you are on a road... Otherwise without said mod every tile is the same raids and stuff are event based where you are on the map has no relevance....

2) Deep water is deep water, the darker color you can't walk thru...

3) Yes see what I wrote in section 1

4) Nope the game will generate stuff for you to raid that will be nearby like lumber camps, mining camps and the like....

Here is what I consider as I really didn't answer your question in the title of the post just your sub questions....

I look at the Average Temperature and try to find a mild climate 40-90 ish Farenheit...
I look at the average rainfall to ensure the rain is abundant...
I look at the Stone Types with a preference towards Granite (For Durability) and Marble (For Art)
I look at the terrain is it hills or mountains for instance I prefer to have hills and or mountains rather then plains but that's a personal preference thing as I tend to be a cave dweller....

2) By 'hydro power', you mean the watermill generator? Deepness doesn't matter for watermill generators (https://www.rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Watermill_generator). The smallest green rectangle that's 5x1 (?) needs to be in the water, the bigger rectangle that's 13x7 is the area that you don't want to put another watermill at. For efficiency.

3) You can't land on ocean tiles without a mod that allows you to do so?
