These resource sites are honestly the way to go, because faction bases are a LOT tougher want wont replenish should you defeat them. Resource sites scale to your level so they can have as little as 1-2 pawns and a bit of loot, up to entire groups of pawns and a fairly sizeable cache of goodies.
I'm not sure the difference between town or world map site in context of your question..
There are different options you're given when raiding. Some can be mining sites, some can be wood farming sites... When you reach the hex on the map it's at you go into the area like it's your own place in the world. You see their building and their colonists.
You control your colonists like you do as if they are drafted and fighting off a raid against you, but from the other side.
They are often puzzles. You should look at the way they are set up to see how best to approach them. Can you take out a battery on the blind side of a turret? Can you attack them while they are sleeping?
