Eventually you can build your defences in such a way that you can shift things a little more in your favour, such as fighting in the dark, lowering sightlines to keep things close-range and rely more on traps/automated weapons.
I also noticed you can do "half-blind" reducing the mood debuff from -6 to -1, and improving opinion of others from -30 to +10.

Haven't tried it myself but that's how it was written by several other posts here so together with the flavor text that would make a lot of sense.
