Stupid manhunting events
Just so you know : I'm fine with manhunting events. It's a rimworld, wildlife is supposed to be somewhat dangerous. Manhunting bear ? Totally fine and realistic. Pack of manhunting lynxes or cougars or something like that ? I can believe it.

15 manhunting cats or squirrels ? Not so much. It's completely unfun to fight, unless you've got like 4 minigun pawns (and that's not the case), and now manhunting events barely give any products since that rage disease thing (which SEEMS to cause manhunting) ruins half or more of the corpses. Also the animals in question are very tough, cats literally manage to subdue or cripple my pawns.

Yeah, I can wait it out since i've got walls. Except that will ruin my goodwill with any caravan or trader that will happen, and I'm not willing to risk it since it's three days.

So I kill most cats, except they bumrush me and end up wounding half the colony, and I get an infection.

I put the dude on a room with a bed, the infection goes on. Except he leaves the bed, which makes the infection continue on despite several "go rest" orders. Despite pretty much constant healing the infection outruns the immunity (maybe it's him ? I got another infection which I did manage to handle pretty easily), I try to use the leader's faith healing ability but can't because another ability use resets all cooldowns for some reason, infection is extreme and the dude is sleeping (which I guess makes sense from a flavor standpoint but WHY would you not use that ability, if not on a bedded pawn ???) and there. Death due to cats.

I guess I should have a dedicated hospital at almost 3 years in but 15 cats attacking my colony ??? what. ALSO, rabies doesn't mean animals form packs, quite the contrary, in fact, they just attack everything because they've got a microorganism in their brain that tells them to bite to infect others.

Is there a way to mod manhunting attacks so less silliness happens ? Being attacked by one or two savage bears - yeah, totally in genre. 20 squirrels which are super fast and reach my ranged weapon colonists pretty fast ? Eh...

I just posted this in a different thread but if you have a setup like this there is no friendly fire:

█████OXX
██___OXX
██_██OXX
██_██
___██
█████

█ is wall, _ is empty tile, O is melee, X is ranged. This setup turns any manhunting event into free meat, even if you only get 40% of the corpses, they can only attack one at a time while 9 of your colonists can attack them. Manhunting Rhinos might still be a little dangerous to deal with like this, those horns man.

Use a choke point. Single wide gap, block it with a melee colonist or 3, have your ranged characters safely behind. 20 cats attacking one at a time against a bunch of colonists with guns and melee weapons go down very fast and cause almost no damage. You can turn scaria rot chance down in the difficulty settings if you want to be able to butcher everything.

I... was under the impression that a pawn that was more than 1 (or is it 2 now ?) tiles away from a ranged pawn was under threat of friendly fire ?

Edit : so it's more than 2 apparently, still enough to make a melee block.

You can even have a 4th row when the tanks have shieldbelts. Otherwise good post, Astasia

you don't have to fight manhunting packs, just close your doors.

Okay, so it's just a question of strategy. Thanks.

play with combat extended, or another related mod which adds in mounted machine guns... these machine guns will lay down enough fire to clear out that situation, or just use a killzone to funnel them properly.

Personally I prefer Embrasures.... Which is a mod but its a mod that makes sense.... If your smart enough to crash on a planet in a space ship your smart enough to make a hole in the wall you can shoot out of.....

I had 5 huskies attack today and waited them out, after 3 days there were still 2 of them which I then killed. They hang around a while :)
