at their core both games are story generators in an preexisting world but beyond that they belong into different (sub-) genres.
kenshi at its core is a simulation/rpg and RW is a colony managment sim.
both games featue the same feeling of openness though if you give them a chance ( tried kenshi as well, liked the story generator aspect but didnt get into all the other stuff)
Kenshi can be RPG but it also be base builder. Preparing and building defenses for invasions is fun part. Then putting bandits into prisons and recruiting them or killing them...
Kenshi is a lot more about recovering from struggles, being beaten over and over until you can reverse the scale of power.
Rimworld won't try to kill you immediately, but it will be insidious at times. It will be fair for most of it. You will have losses but they're preventable with experience, and don't matter too much. You'll get more meat to use. The game is a bit generous if you're struggling.
Obviously rimworld was inspired by dwarf fortress lol but i didnt want to play a far to difficult colony sim i wanted a similar challenge of game and found kenshi. I guess the fact at the moment there just are no other games like kenshi or rimworld. They have been unique to themselves for a number of years. Going medival looks like it will be a good competetor to rimworld once its fully finished. THen you have viking colony sim thats supposed to come out this year and manor lords. Granted the last two have some diferences with rts focuses.
As far as a direct comparison to kenshi tho there are similarities. I preffer rimworld because even though kenshi claims to be a game where you can do anything you want there are a lot of limitations to that claim. I guess same with rimworld, but with ideology coming out in a few weeks and the fact that other than being a colony of slavers you can do just about anything i guess that would be one thing both games have in common. Though rimworld is tied to pretty much whatever map of the worlds cell you choose to play on where kenshi is a true open world sandbox. You can literally go anywhere else in the world in rimworld but unless you're moving your colony to another tile the cell maps are fairly small. But theyre all randomly generated so thats nice. Which i think for me is the big selling point over kenshi. I am a sucker for games with random map generation and rimworld has lots of that where as with kenshi its the same map and factions over and over again.
Theres far to many similarities and differences between rimworld and kenshi to type here. Personally i would say if you enjoyed kenshi you would enjoy rimworld and would be worth your money if you were to buy and play rimworld based on comparison to kenshi alone.
