Get a gun and be done with any and all tribal combats, then work towards high AP weapons and be done with every other encounter.
Anyone that considers melee weapons useless in CE has no idea what they are talking about. Plasma- and monoswords are awesome weapons and they are extremely effective against mechs and other enemies when you can get them into choke points.
I even had to install run and gun to make them less effective...
Even pawns with low shooting skill will rarely miss their targets so there is really no reason to use anything other than guns.
The combat in the game doesn't need to be modded at all. It works really well within the premise of the game concept.
