hydroponics and solar flares
I was reading up a bit on hydroponics for my colony. They are not tunnelers but they have been sort of pushed into the mountains, I would like to set up a hydroponic grow but it requires insane amounts of power that I don't really have to spare, for the sun lamp.
I am considering setting up a second geothermal station and route the power a good distance to run this set up, but on my Rimworld I get tons of solar flares.

My question, if I have a hydroponic setup and I lose power, how long before the plants are dead? I feel like I get at least 1-2 solar flare events a year. They never last long though, from hours to at most a day.

I have a vanometric power cell a friendly AI gifted me for a quest. Can you ever escape the solar flare curse? Especially deep inside a mountain...

There is no way to avoid solar flares without disabling them via custom starts or using mods. There is a mod that gives you a machine that nullifies solar flares, but it eats a ton of power while actively blocking one.

oh interesting, thanks. Do plants die instantly pretty much in the dark? Or does it take a certain time for certain crops?

Thanks! :dawnmachine:

Unfortunately I can't answer that. I use the Dense Hydroponics mod that functions vastly differently to the vanilla, so I don't remember how long it takes for plants to die in unpowered basins.

If you want a way to avoid some of the problems of solar flares, look up Vanilla expanded - Power. It adds in a new power source, Helixian Gas, that can be used for all kinds of stuff like lights, heating/cooling, etc. It can even be used to generate electricity but even then those generators fail when solar flares kick in.

Given that they last a day I don't mind them too much unless it hits when a raid is coming. Mad dash when the game starts, annoyance later on.

Solar flare diables all power systems, so hydrophonics also, and yes plants die

Hydroponics grow fast enough that it won't be much of an issue. Just make sure you have enough food on hand to survive if a crop fails.

You can grow plants, use em for chamfullto pay the bill and get a surplus in food. Or you grow the new fungus that doesnt need light

Rich soil is 140% growth rate. Hydroponics is like 280% growth rate. I may be off on that number, I haven't actually looked at in a LONG time.

Thats great, i didn't know it was that good. It will be worth my time then. I noticed the fungus, but I am pretty sure my Ideo is against the eating of fungus because I made cannibalism acceptable.

Thanks so much

No, you're correct.
