Obviously I rarely completely deconstruct free-standing structures. o.O
I recall in my last game that I repurposed a monument I had built, rather than tearing it down completely.
Learned something new.....again!

But if you put stuff in it, the UI gets angry.
What I did was, after the timer for allowing deconstruction had passed, I tore out the plinths and columns on the inside and turned it into a barracks.
I needed a 2nd barracks anyway, for a recent influx of new recruits and being true to my character, I was lazy and instead of building one I just put beds in the vacant building that was there already.
