Deconstructing buildings and roof collapse
So...I just had a roof collapse after ordering deconstruction on a monument I'd built for a quest. Is that a thing, where you 'need' to explicitly order the roof to be removed before deconstructing a building or did these pawns just muck it up?

Yes, it is. Always remove roof -- first -- before removing supporting structure.

Yes. I always have them deconstruct the roof first if I'm completely tearing down a building

If you build a monument, mark the whole area as "remove roof" before you actually build the monument. No need for the extra work of roofing and unroofing.

LOL, wow, this is my 4th game since I started playing Rimworld...and I'm 5 years into the game, and I never knew that.
Obviously I rarely completely deconstruct free-standing structures. o.O

I recall in my last game that I repurposed a monument I had built, rather than tearing it down completely.

Learned something new.....again!

Thanks guys.

That might be what they thought would be cool to give people some random looks into their base instead of those squares every game. Maybe also the intention with the cooldown before deconstruction.
But if you put stuff in it, the UI gets angry.

What I did was, after the timer for allowing deconstruction had passed, I tore out the plinths and columns on the inside and turned it into a barracks.
I needed a 2nd barracks anyway, for a recent influx of new recruits and being true to my character, I was lazy and instead of building one I just put beds in the vacant building that was there already.

And that way the game had influence on how your base looks like !

^ That. Factions don't care if the monuments have no roof, so it's easier to just build them without.

There really is, literally, a mod for everything.

Should know that by now! ;D Both that and Smart Construction are the few mods I wish were integrated into Rimworld. My stupid vanilla pawns still get themselves stuck behind walls. At least they can't suffocate to death like in Oxygen Not Included.

Or build a wall on their own face.

Without mods, pawns will never remove roofs unless you mark them for removal.
