Nobody drinks the beer
I finally spent the time to brew beer. I love using chocolate as a way to provide recreation boosts so I figured why not give beer a try. Whenever I send a solo pawn to mine out an LRM scanner site, I slip in some beer and chocolate and it does wonders.

I enjoy the Hospitality mod and take pride in my rec room. I placed some beer stockpiles around the base and at least 3 stacks in the rec room, I even placed beers in my prison area for the prisoners. They have their own nutrient past dispenser they use, but nobody ever touches the beer. Even if the guests or prisoner's ideology allows drugs, they won't touch it.

What am I missing? for some reason, if I have joints laying around, they disappear instantly, but not the beer.

In vanilla prisoners usually don't take drugs except if they have nutritional value (which beer does, but they might still prefer real food) or if they are addicted. Not sure why your joints get used. This might be mod related.

Maybe it's also because I delete the "social drug" policy every time I start a game. Prisoners seem to use it since I "can't delete policy in use" when I have prisoners, but might just switch to "no drugs" when I delete it. So maybe it's your default drug policy causing this?

Not everybody likes beer I guess.
I have to order several of my pawns to drink or use a drug policy. But a few of them will go drink on their own during rec time.

If they are allowed to do it for joy, it's kinda random how often they do it. I usually allow psychite tea and beer and after months of that, sometimes someone get's an addiction if I never check on them. Most of them are okay though.

maybe you've been brewing the beer from Fear The Walking Dead. so its god awful and will only be drank in a desperate attempt to do something different.

Haha yea maybe. I am not sure what it is. I set everyone's permissions to allow for the drinking of beer. I guess if a pawn has many recreations to choose from, they prefer the piano over beer. Maybe because its a drink/food and requires "thirst" to be active to trigger a desire for beer in the pawn.

When I have guests, they often play cards, play piano, look at art. Yet my 2000+ silver widescreen tv doesn't seem to get used that much. I often sit back and see what the guests do and my horse shoe gets way more use than the tv does (granted it might achieve less recreation/time than the widescreen).

I just really figured the prisoners would want my beer if all allowed..must be very bad beer.

I have provided my pawns with beer, cider, smokeweed joints, psychoid tea and desserts for their pleasure needs and put it all on shelves in the recreation room to make it convenient. (Yes, some of those are from mods)

I set the drug policy to allow them to only use each once per day and only if mood and recreation are below a certain threshold as I'd hate to waste the stuff on a pawn that doesn't need it.
All of them get some useage every single day, but beer does seem to be lower in popularity compared to the joints and tea.

I have literally no idea how the pawns decide which to take, given that they are all stored right next to each other, but it certainly seems like some pawns are more inclined for specific types.

That is one of the things Tynan has quoted often and probably aimed for. Code vs peoples experiences and the story they make of it. Code probably says that everything is equal for everybody and it's just rolls. But due to the result of the roles, you think some people prefer stuff. That is makes them real people : )

Stuff like how close things are and random rolls are probably mostly deciding. The 1 per day thing should be a min rule not a max rule. Your mood thresholds keep them from using multiples though. And I would never give my people joints for random recreation. It makes them so useless for a long time. Joints are painkillers and psychic drone emergency rations.

I first turned on the joints because I had the Long Night event and my people, being tree lovers, got pretty miserable due to all the trees dieing in the darkness (I didn't know about bonsai's at the time)....I needed to give them drugs to keep them happy. LOL

Since then I just left it on, because they pretty much only use the drugs at the end of their work day (where I have recreation blocked in before bed time). It's very rare for anyone to be high or drunk while working.
...though I did once have a doctor perform a surgery while tripping. I got really nervous when I noticed that mid-surgery.

Beer hardly does any noticeable debuff and psychite tea does a nice buff and of course all of them give a mood buff. So that is kinda wasted if you use that before bed.

I think the sales of Rimworld allow Ty to enjoy some pretty good quality smokeleaf, seeing how mild drug use in the game seems to be pretty harmless and have quite a few massive mood bonuses. I always send pod teams with psychite tea, beer and wake-up. I use wake-up quite a bit and only have had 2 overdoses, they did result however in instant death.
glass zebra Sep 8, 2021 @ 2:43pm
Wake up is the most strange thing tbh as there is hardly any danger apart from overdoses. Amphetamines in real life a far more dangerous and pretty much just give you a negative sleep bar next to the normal ones, with all it's costs. In rimworld you can use it to just fill up your sleep bar : D. The whole drug system in rimworld is basically simplified and without danger in moderation or nobody would use them. Pretty sure most people never touch e.g. yayo, just because it can make addicted on the first dose and there is so much hatred for withdrawl.

Also, for some reason, in some patch they removed all descriptions for withdrawl symptoms completely and there is no way ingame to look for their effect. Or I am too stupid to find them. The withdrawl in the healthbar says nothing.
