farm animal during winter ?
ok so i went to challenge myself and decided to settle in a very cold area where in winter can go as far as -40C, im managing just fine !, my cows and chicken on the others hand ...
with the pen system i got no idea how to set them up for a "outside" area (pen) while having a warm "barn" to retreat into when too cold

if anyone managed to figure it out im hungry for knowledge :D

My best approach was to build the barn in the middle of the pen, then set up animal sleeping spots (which you actually assign) and set up a campfire for heat. Don't forget to build the cloth screen versus a door. I also have a storage spot for the kibble. I also built a barn nearby the pen for my turtle farm. That way they have a warm spot, and can walk to the other barn for kibble if they need to.

A small room with animal flaps can do that, but they seem to be sometimes a bit slow to notice when it gets really cold. If it get's -40°C, do you even have a reasonable growing period to use a pen at all instead of a barn year around?

As long as the temp inside is high enough, they could put down a sunlamp and have year round growing. At that point I'd make the outside area as small as possible, so it still counts as a pen, but have the majority of the animal space be the barn.

Why would you need an outside area at all then? A sunlamp (for dandelions I suppose?) seems to be a rather energy high solution. You can feed them hay, raw fungus (winter grown) or simple meals if you ditch the chickens.

I don't know whether a pen has to be partially fenced, or if it works just with walls. I've not really experimented with the new system. I suggested the small outside area just to be on the safe side, as I know that works.

As for the fungus, you need the Tunneler Meme to grow them, if I'm correct. As the OP hasn't said if he has that or not, I discounted it. If they do have it, they you're right it is an option. They've also said they're in a -40C area, so I'd assume (maybe wrongly) that any summer time temps will barely be in growing range. At that point enclosed dirt areas with sunlamps, or hydroponics/sunlamps, seems like the best option for sustainable food, despite the energy costs.

You just need something fenced or walled. Just a room of some sorts.

You don't need the Tunneler meme to grow fungus. That's just for the fungal gravel and to like eating them.

for the area i got myself in my mountain base, inside a open area 20x25 ish in the open, i jus tslammed down a pen marker and worked, just tryed the flap thing instead of a door (with proper wall) and work perfectly, placed down a eater and its working beautifully :D

also yes i do have hydroponics for the veggy, BUT advantage of playing in extreme cold area
is huge number of muffalo and megasloth, when hunted they give HUGE amount of meat (i really do mean a lot !), tbf i dont seems to be having any issue making kibble and be stabel with this ^^

Are you using veggies from your hydroponics for that kibble? If you have the time for the extra work, make pemmican instead then. Can't be used for taming but for feeding and produces 60% more nutrition instead of 25% more. If you feed your animals meat though, I wonder why even have them instead of just eating Muffalo and Megatherium instead?

That's good to know. The only time I paid attention to fungus was when I had that meme anyway. I thought the gravel was needed to grow them.

Good to know about the pens, too.

The new fungus makes tundra colonies extremely easy to start in comparison to what they used to be.
