Hello how do i lock my colonists gear so my soldier stops taking off his helmet and replacing it with a hat?

Force them to wear the helmet. Click on pawn, right-click on the helmet, and 'force to wear'. They won't take it off until you clear the forced priority.

If you assign your pawn to "soldier" it shouldn't be changing a helmet for a hat.

If you have certain pawns set up for combat, you can use something like the armour rack mod so that they can be in more casual clothes outside of a fight, but if a raid shows up you can get them to swap to their assigned combat attire with a single command (it's better done when they're drafted to make it easier to manage once they have equipped their gear from the rack).

You have control of what "outfit" each pawn can choose to wear....even without mods, it is as simple as removing hat from the outfit you have him assigned. If "hat" isn't an allowed type of gear for him, he won't switch to it.

I second the recommendation for "Better Pawn Control", but even with that, YOU need to take the time to set up outfits that match what you want pawns to wear.

Looks like mostly pretty covered. A pawn focuses on wearing what is best for them in vanilla that you have allowed in their allowed menu.

If you have a soldier you want geared up all the time, then best to make them a more restricted soldier style.

A no mod strategy I use, I have an armory garrison point I try to build with some rows of shelves. One for helmets, one for armor. Later tech will expand for flak vests, pants and shield bubbles.

It is a bit micromanage, but I then order the pawns to grab one item per shelf as required. Is quick once remember which my melee focused pawns are. Also cool to watch em all gear up.

Drawback of this gear up is it does take time, which can be disadvantageous if something drops right on top. If I have "tough" characters, I sometimes give them the always armored, provided they can take the penalties from the gear. Best colony guard imo is a tough with a walk speed boost.

Wow,

You do not need a mod to control what colonists wear.

There are already in game tools to fine tune outfit selection.
