There is a door that lets animals freely pass through if you want them able to go out. I do that and make a small fence just inside with a gate. I "Hold Open" the gate when I want to let animals out. I close the gate when I want handlers to keep all the animals inside.
Fences and gates can be used to separate male from female by using two pen markers, one for male only, one female only. Good for chickens.
I am away from game else I would screenshot.
They're also not necessary as there isn't any benefits to a room being labelled a barn.

Where would you have your drunken barn dance otherwise?
In the corpse freezer like a normal person.
