Mechanoid gunfights
So are mechanoids supposed to be super accurate or something? I know pikemen and lancers are supposed to kinda play a sniper role but its really crazy to see them fighting my colonists in a big shootout. One of my colonists got shot in the head and instantly died because of a stray bullet from a centipedes heavy charge cannon and another one stepped out of cover for maybe 3-4 seconds then got shot in the heart by a lancer and instantly died. Is that just bad luck or are mechanoids just really good at killing people? Neither of the colonists that died took any damage before that by the way, just straight instakills.

Yes, they are very good at killing people, that's why you need EMP grenades to keep them stunned and/or melee to stop them from shooting.

Also, that's the reason why I never pick any pawns without tough to do any fighting whatsoever, a good charge lance hit can instakill a pawn, a tough guy is very, very unlikely to ever die suddenly like that, even in bad armor, you'd have to get hit at least twice with full penetration at the same vital body part, before you get hit anywhere else, and before you take so many hits that the pain knocks you down before you die.

Tough is OP

PS: Mechs also have very competent melee robots, the scythers, but they are super squishy and you can usually kill them before the actual fight starts, also, don't run into melee in a massive firefight, if there are too many hide behind cover/corners and have an EMP grenadier spam grenades at the entrance while you fight, bonus points if he has the fast firing perk, forgot it's name.

Trigger-Happy, as opposed to Careful Shooter. The latter is useful to make lower skilled pawns actually hit stuff, the former is good for when they are very skilled (and especially for if they have a slow-firing weapon like a sniper rifle or charge lance).

Word of warning: if you're using EMP grenades, don't combo them with melee pawns that have bionic stomachs, brain implants (from Royalty) or Shield Belts whilst other ranged enemies are still firing on them. Your own EMP grenades will short out these devices causing vomiting, stunning etc on your own pawns.

Otherwise, EMP grenades are vital against mid/late-game mechanoid attacks.

Thanks, and good reminder, you don't want your melee pawns vomiting nonstop, and the ones with brain implants to get instantly KO'd

I have a high melee pawn (14) with a zeushammer and full flak and recon gear. Zeushammer does EMP damage, it really tears through mechanoids.

It's a beautiful weapon, in fact it tears through anything, it often removes the body part it hits in humans too

Less often than does a monosword or plasmasword though - albeit those are great for annihilating anything else. Zeushammers are the way forward if you can get them because they are great for wiping out bugs, mechs, and raiders (without killing them so often as other weapons).

Heh. I like them.

EMP for mechs, flamethrowers and burn damage for insects

That is not just bad luck. Mechanoids have high accuracy, high armor penetration, and high damage. They're very good at breaking through armor, dermal layers, and destroying organs. To put it simply, you're better off having everyone charge into melee with mechanoids and hit them with the butt of their guns than you are to have a fire fight with them.

Even with full cataphract armor and hyperweave clothing, I keep ressurector serums on hand for if a lancer just blows someone's brains out in one shot.

I don’t like the plasma sword. Setting someone on fire while fighting sounds cool, but once an enemy is on fire it can path through your pawns. This makes holding a doorway or similar choke point hard and increases the risk since once the fire is out you’ll have attacks coming from both sides of your choke point.
