Windows:
Drag and drop the extracted ModName folder into your RimWorld***Win/Mods/ folder (not in Core);
Make sure not to "double extract" your mod, e.g. RimWorld***Win/Mods/Modfolder/Modfolder, when extracting your mod
Mac:
Right-click the RimWorld application and show package contents;
For Steam users, the directory is : cd Library/Application\ Support/Steam/steamapps/common/RimWorld
Drag and drop the ZIP archive's ModName folder into your Mods folder (not in Core) in the application package;
Linux:
Unpack archive into the Mods folder ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Rimworld/Mods;
Start up your game;
Click the Mods button and activate your mods.
Some mods require a fresh world generation to work.
1. Go to "SteamLibrary\steamapps\workshop\content"
2. In here delete the folder that belongs to RimWorld. In my case it's the folder called "294100"
3. Start Rimworld. Here you'll get some error messages that mod files were missing, but the menu will be back. Go into mods, and see that no mods remain.
4. Save empty modlist and exit rimworld again.
5. Verify the integrity of RimWorld. It'll say no files were missing, but also start downloading the missing mods.
I've done this multiple times, and saved the working modlists using the ModManager mod.
My issue however only happens after selecting a button whether it be to play the game, open mod menu, options and etc with the only working button being the button to quit and dev quicktest. I can still technically play the game but I cannot load anymore mod in or out.
At least one of your mods is misbehaving. Outdated mods are the prime suspect, but frankly it could be any of them. The more invasive a mod is, the more likely it is to break things, but even innocuous cosmetic mods can cause problems.
Sounds like hardware is struggling. Which happens with the excessive use of mods. Could also be an autosave issue which I had too at one point. Overall suggestion is to NOT bload up your game so much with mods. Does one really need 20 different dining tables to choose from?
There's this collection that I'd recommend to anyone with quality of life mods which greatly increases the overall experiences:

Then add some of the infamous content mods like medieval overhaul and top it off with some vanilla extended content.
