Is it normal to have no special ores visible?
I'm playing for my first time ever on a mountainous map, so there is a whole lot of the map I cannot see right now, but after getting my colony settled I realized there is literally no ores of any kind visible anywhere on the map. Just granite and standstone.

On other non mountainous maps I've always seen steel, plasteel, components, uranium, silver and often even jade and gold sticking out on the edges of the various rock formations. On this map, tons and tons of rock edges where all the mountain faces are...but non even 1 tiny ore.

Is this normal, or would I be better off rerolling?

Maybe add a screenshot.

I will say I wouldn't call it unusual, especially depending on how long your visible perimeter is vs your mountainous surface area. If you have less perimeter to area, then you're going to see less visible ore, perhaps none as you state.

As to your question about should you reroll, it is likely rerolling would be easier, but that's up to you. RimWorld is rarely about being easy, so YMMV.

It's not "normal" but not really that unlikely either. Mountainous maps have more total surface ore than other map types, but the density of that ore is lower so there is a lot more "empty stone" on the map, meaning it's more likely to be hidden.

Usually you should see at least a few steel deposits, but you are much less likely to see any gold/plasteel/silver/etc.

I can't say I've ever seen a mountainous map without visible steel, but it wouldn't surprise me if a few other people on these forums have had similar starts.

In my latest run i had the opposite STEEL AS FAR AS THE MINER COULD MINE! Got like 6k Steel cause of that

I got enough steel to build the research bench by deconstructing some steel ruins that were on the map, and its a tribal start, so I am not in dire need yet of any of the advanced materials. Still, a bit concerned that there just aren't any on the map....

Here's screenshots of the map. Had to do it in 6 parts to get the whole thing:

I've had it happen a few times, it's just the luck of the draw really. Sometimes you get lucky and all the good stuff is on show from the start, guess it's all part of random generation.

If you used the map reroll mod, it (by default I think) applies a penalty to ore on the map accoriding to the number of times you rerolled. To the point that there can be none at all. This can be disabled in the mod settings.

I do have that mod installed, but I didn't reroll, I just used the map that I got. I also have the setting for it to cost resources turned off anyways.

With the amount of exposed rock, this is really unusual. I think it's quite likely that that reroll mod is bugged and hit you with a huge resource penalty when it wasn't supposed to.

Might be worth turning on dev mode and use the remove fog command to see if there is any ore at all, if you spot some right away there's also a refog command to set it back to normal. You never know with mods, and it would suck to spend a few more hours on the map only to never find anything.

Nice, I did not know there was a "refog" command or I'd have done that right away insteead of asking here. Thank you!

Seems you are right. After doing the clear fog as suggested by the last reply, I found only about 22 total tiles of special ores on the entire map. 4 tiles of it were Jade and the rest was Plasteel...not a single square of steel anywhere on the mapl

*sigh* time to start over.
