recreational music?
I might just be overlooking something but I suspect it's actually part of a DLC I don't own. I don't have royalty or ideology but since I've been getting back into the game I notice that when colonists are recreation deprived and it lists possible recreation types, music is on the list, yet I haven't seen or found any instruments or sources of music to supply that recreation type. It's not exactly game breaking, but it does feel like I'm at a mild disadvantage without the DLC's as a result as they apparently want a recreation type I'm incapable of providing. It did mean I had to fast-track tv's a bit, but luckily that was about it (I generally avoid recreational drugs if possible, which is a choice that blocks another entertainment avenue for me but you can only ignore so many recreation types before they complain again).

It seems I can manage it well enough by giving a bit of extra priority to getting tv's and a telescope slightly earlier, but is there a way to get the colonists to not count music towards possible recreation if I am incapable of actually supplying it in base game?

Music is a new recreation type added by the Royalty DLC, that DLC also adds higher tiers of expectations which make an extra recreation type important. Without Royalty you do not have access to music but also don't need it, TV's a telescope and some chocolate are more than enough on top of the basics.

Ideology also adds higher expectations without a new recreation type, so if you have Ideology and not Royalty there is a slight disadvantage there, but the base recreation types are still enough (barely), without even using drugs as one.

Hm, check the machining able. Maybe you can craft musical instruments yet. (I know they aren't built, but crafted. So check the various crafting benches.)

Edit: NVM.

The way recreation tolerance is handled has nothing to do with the number of recreation types in the game and is instead entirely dependent on the wealth of your colony. The higher your wealth, the slower recreation tolerance decreases, requiring more types of recreation to satisfy the same level of recreation desire as a poorer colony.

Music was introduced in the Royalty dlc with the Harp, Harpsichord, and Grand Piano.

Even without the dlc you should have no issue providing sufficient recreation types to your colonists with Billards (Dexterity), Poker (Cerebral), Roulette (Social), Television (Television Watching), Telescope (Telescope Study), Cloud Watching/Meditation (Solitary), and Chocolate (Gluttony) even if you decide to ignore drugs for recreation.

I have been able to manage it without instruments, it just seems odd to me that it's a recreation type that still applies even though I lack both DLCs entirely. I made sure my game is even set to "simulate not having [DLC]" for both options, yet that one stills bleeds through. It isn't game breaking, just made me adjust my priorities slightly. It's mostly just mildly annoying when they complain about something I genuinely have no actual way to address directly, even if there is an effective workaround.

To be fair I'm a bit of a hoarder so I do tend to end up with a colony slightly richer than I can actually support in other ways (like defense or recreation needs) so it's also slightly my own fault and I'm fully aware of that part of it. It's why I stopped picking Phoebe, she hurts when you play like I do, certainly shows you how you overstepped that line. It's just normally also fairly easy to compensate for that difference with some slightly cheesy methods (since I'm a hoarder it doesn't take much to trade for the telescope for example...and everyone uses killboxes to take on waves they couldn't normally beat in open combat)

Hoarding isn't an issue and you can play in any way that makes you happy (and I wholly encourage it), I just wanted to point out that music being mentioned in tool tips doesn't have any bearing on the demands of your colonists. Colonists will never have a specific demand for music, and wealth only ever brings you up to needing 6 different types of recreation to maintain full recreation satisfaction even in the wealthiest colonies.

The only exception to this is within the Royalty dlc, where colonists will demand music instruments in their throne room if they have sufficiently high noble titles. This won't affect you at all though in the core game.

That's good at least. It did seem like their expectations grow a bit faster now so it had me slightly worried. I do have one game where I'm outright cheating with console commands and despite the massive and incredibly rich colony that results I can cover their overall recreational needs there so I wasn't too worried since it is clearly doable. I just wasn't sure exactly how much I had to reprioritize a legit colony to make that happen without playing god. It doesn't seem to be too much though. Just get more varied entertainment up slightly sooner, which is easy for a lot of them realistically. About the only one I seem to need that I can't outright provide myself if I refuse drug recreation is the telescope, and it doesn't take long to find one of those available for trade or even a quest reward.
