The game will regularly check to see if they're unpenned, and if they are and capable of it, they may begin the process. You'll get a warning that they're wandering away, which basically gives you a day to grab them and pen them before they leave the map.
For the vast majority of encounters, this means it's not a problem. You just won't be on a map long enough for them to begin wandering, and if they do you can just finish your task, pack up your caravan, and move on.
If you're purposefully staying on a map for an extended period of time to mine stone/ore or something else, you may need to chop/bring some wood and setup a pen though.
If you need stuff that’s packed on the animal click on their gear tab and drop it manually.
The hostiles won’t attack your animals.
I'm looking forward to it.
Yes, I'm still a noob at this game- Thanks for that tip. And glad to hear of the hitching post in a future release!!!
"Do what now??"
"You know, just take each muffalo's halter and tie it around a tree."
"Can't we just build a pen???"
"Takes too long to build a pen, just TIE them to a TREE."
"(♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, Joe, I can't do that! Tying animals to trees isn't even in this game!!!)"
"Bob, did you just break the Fourth Wall.........??"
"♥♥♥♥."
This was stated multiple times by other posters many years ago when this thread was made. It's also largely pointless, caravan animals do not wander away in mission maps, it's usually a waste to time roping them to a hitching post.
