any sort of sandbox mode?
i'm very very interested in this game, except one thing: the combat. i hate sim-building games which also include enemies. it looks so awesome....except for that.
can it be disabled?

RimWorld has an option to lower the 'Threat Level' if you choose to customize the game settings. This 'Threat Level' determines the strength of hostile events such as raids and hostile animals and such.

It will be possible to reduce the hostile events to super-easy, no threat at all, but it will not disable the events from happening. Part of survival will rely on combat, even hunting for food.

RimWorld is a masterpiece, but combat is a part of every game. Please watch some let's plays on YouTube so that you can be sure of your purchase.

God mode?

Yeah, just enable dev mode in the main options. That will turn on a dev tool bar along the top of the screen. From there you can turn on a god mode. With that you can just kill anything that raids you.

edit: Actually you may not need to enable the god mode. I think that also has you build building/items immediately. Think the dev mode toolbar alone may be enough.

Most events can be disabled from the scenario editor, I'm sure raids and anything else should be able to be disabled.

The easiest difficulty disables all but the most mild of bad events.

You could also edit the scenario and disable all of the hostile events manually as well, it would require you to restart but you'd be able to turn off the events that cause raids, sieges, problem causers and ect

At the lowest difficulty level, ALL* events that involve hostile forces are out of the game UNLESS you specifically opt for such an event in a quest.
* There may be ( not sure IIRC ) still the occasional one criple with a stick to challenge your caravans.

Events like extreme weather and diseases are still present.
But yes, you can disable meeting bad guys.

You can just disable all the combat events so yes you can play this way

Along with editing the scenario you can also edit the difficulty level these days. Look just under the hardest difficulty setting and you will see the "Custom.." button for playstyle.

Combat is a pretty major focus of the game, while you can disable it and that works alright for learning some of the basics, you are removing most of the point of the game by doing so. This isn't like other colony building games where you have interesting economic gameplay or supply chains to manage, turning off combat in RimWorld is like playing a Tower Defense game without any enemy spawns. Much of the "building" in this colony builder is defenses, like walls, turrets, and traps and the careful placement of them to handle the escalating enemy waves. Resources go into building and maintaining those defenses, while also upgrading colonist gear so they can fight better.

There are mods that enhance the colony management aspect and add more to do in terms of production, but I don't think there is any set of mods out there that would make RimWorld a competent non-combat colony management game.

You probably have your answer already, but just in case, let me put it this way: there are so many settings you can customize and so many mods in the workshop that you can make the experience whatever you want it to be. If you don't want combat, you can play without combat.
CrackaJack Dec 23, 2020 @ 2:40pm
man. just... no. rimworld without fights is just not possible, no matter the mods or settings. this is a survival game. i cant believe how many folks are trying to convince you otherwise, but things trying to kill you is a CORE ELEMENT of this game. if you hate fighting in building sims, this is just not your game, which is ok. or... with which mods can u turn off the combat elements? names, or i call ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. to "disable combat" you´d have to make a customstart and disable 70% of game events manually, and probably you´d still get eaten by animals.

there are no raids on peacefull mode and mad animals only have a weigth of 0.10
so expect a mad hare or a squirl once a year. and those can be ingnored moslty by hiding inside. and there are no Flashstorm, toxic fallout and volcanic winters

there is much more to rimworld then its fights.
Shameless self promotion as proof:

I agree, I don't care for combat myself and would really like to go a whole game without it. Unfortunately, I don't think you can *totally* disable it, however:

If you turn dev mode on one of the options is "view settings" or somesuch. I honestly can't remember exactly what it's called. One of the things you can turn off and on in that is "player damage." This will give ALL colonist pawns invincibility and thus you don't have to worry quite so much about combat. This also extends to colonist animals, which means while it's on you cannot slaughter any of them. Just FYI.
