families?
i know that the characters in the game can get together in love as a couple, but are we able to breed them together to get kids and populate the map, or is this more so, survive to eventually escape?

Human pregnancy and human children are not in the vanilla game. Some mods add them if you would like them, but otherwise marriage is as far as couples go.

Even with those, it still doesn't become a populate the planet situation. You could setup multiple settlements and move them around over the decades, but your computer is likely to melt before you have any meaningful impact on the planet. Over perhaps there is a mod that sort of lets that happen in the background.

Why such an option was not added?
Are players against the idea?

It just wasn't. Most games can't add everything and the kitchen sink in and expect to ever be released, sometimes features people want don't make it into the game =)

Well.....given the nature of a part of the playerbase, the ability to breed would create the possibility of certain horrors that could cause a severe backlash in the media. I remember the outcry the gay trait caused.
There are certain mods however that add the option of having children. And as expected there are mods that simply add children and learning and so on, and there are mods that can be used to create babyfarms.
Thereby proving the point of not including children in the main game.

From what little I remember of Tynan's post on this, it was more about the belief that most colonies won't last long enough for a child to actually grow up, thus not really being a useful or productive addition to the game experience. The game is designed to end in tragic misery for everyone involved if you don't mod it; it's a "story generator", not a game, by Tynan's standards. You aren't meant to have intergenerational-length play experiences. You're meant to watch your people die after doing your utmost to keep them alive.

There's mods that add rapid ageing mechanics, making this more suited to mod functionality in general than as a core feature in any case.

Mainly a question of scale. This is not a game that goes on for generations. A typical game will only last 5 to 10 years. Providing little time to birth and raise any new generation to usefulness.

I play with mod "children, learning & schools" :) and I trully recommend it. You can get usless young kids or grownups after pregnancy, up to you.
I always enjoyed more the building colony part, rather than raids and fights, so I play at the lowest difficulty. Mentioned mod is a nice mod to make it more difficult (not because of raids but for example how to feed a colony, when half of colonists cannot work till some age)
