I don't think this is a good solution since there are varying food types in Rimworld and ways to acquire them and that should not be blunted away (e.g. egg cooking is the only fine meal way that does not get less yield from people with health conditions that reduce butcher efficiency / gather yield). I am simply saying that there is a similar (though yes more complex) issue with eggs. I wasn't out to present a solution.
Ya, the mod saves a step compared to most other fishing mods but you don't notice it right away. Usually you have to butcher the fish to get varying amounts of generic "fish meat" to use in cooking, sometimes that requires butchering multiple small fish for one meat or butchering one large fish for multiple meat, but VFE allows you to just cook with the whole fish which is really nice. You just have to notice that a minnow and a swordfish have different nutrition. I know this is really tricky and complex for some people, but you seem to have gotten it pretty quickly. Definitely the best fishing mod out there.
Its free, quick food that can sustain a colony indefinitely on only 25 tiles of connected water. Who cares if a single fish cant make a single simple meal? Its food that is always available no matter the season or weather (unless you have a drought event i suppose). If fish were amazing, they would be unbalanced as heck.
He just complains about Vanilla Expanded in any thread it's mentioned, all of the sub mods, no matter what is being discussed, it's either bloat or terrible or confusing. Everyone has different tastes, and some people specifically dislike anything that's popular or well received.
