Geothermal generator in the open
I need more power and I'm out of steam geysers in my base. Is it advisable to build some in the open and enclosed with stone walls? Or will they automatically be targeted by random raids?

I always do this and they don't get targeted. Some fires might be set on the conduits though, which might be bothersome, so always have several lines to your base. And don't forget to remove the roof above them or they will burn.

With regard to the conduit problem, you can build conduits in walls. So, build a stone wall out to your geothermal generator. So long as raiders have a path to a door, they most likely won't mess with the wall. I've even been known to create an enclosed hallway just for the conduit.

Ditto, this is how I do it as well. Though it is more rare that occurs. Usually I instead clear areas to hybrid farm field/solar and wind.

Remember, solar panels do not block wind turbines. Neither do hydroponics.

I have a mod that allows for underground conduits so that won't be a problem.

I never haD raiders try to do anything to the geothermal generators either as long as i have a killbox somewhere else. What determens what the raiders go after? I know for sappers they target someones room and tunnel to that so they wouldn't bother with a generator. But what do normal raiders go for? :portiapoop:

Raiders have objectives that are a little bit random. If, for example, you save and reload they'll select a new target to path to and attack. They seem to have a preference for objects that are close to them, and seem to Really hate built structures such as lamps, coolers, heaters, and beds. If they're in an enclosed space they'll target objects and structures within that space before attempting to break a wall or door to path out. I have heard that they have a strong attraction to prisoners as well and will attempt to free them.

I've had scythers beeline for my geothermal generators before, even choosing to destroy the walls around it to get to it. Pirates and tribals usually set wires on fire and sometimes, rarely, destroy wires inside of walls. Not sure what dictates their preferences at any given moment though.

It's my first playthrough where I haven't lost the entire colony within a couple seasons so take my input for in small measure. I second building walls to geothermal generators with conduit within. I haven't had any issues yet and you get the added bonus of adding chokepoints before your killbox. If pirates need to run around your generator due to a long wall going out you can trap the corner they need to go around and helps to soften larger attacks. From a defensive perspective, anything you can do to give your pawns more time to prepare for an assault the better.

If you place a door at intersections you can snipe enemies and then close the door when they're close and they'll need to move all the way around or waste their time on a useless door.
